The essential focus of the collection is on artists' books
The Helen M. Salzberg Artist in Residence Program funds two working residencies for artists each academic year at the Jaffe Center for Book Arts, in the fall and spring semesters. Artists working in the book arts (and other media, too, as long as the creative project can be thought of as book arts related) are encouraged to apply for this honor. We accept applications from artists from all over the world.
Poet and artist Helen M. Salzberg established the Salzberg AIR Program in 2011. Income from this endowed fund enables artists working in the book arts to come to the Jaffe Center on a semester basis to work and teach at the center. While here, the artist will produce a creative project using JCBA studios and also teach a workshop for FAU students and the general public and mentor FAU students as his or her schedule allows. The Salzberg AIR Program gives our students the opportunity to work alongside highly talented and creative book artists.
The establishment of the program has involved a steep learning curve in the workings of endowments and annual spending allocations from those endowments. Unfortunately, due to poor market performance in 2015/2016, we have deemed it necessary to suspend the Salzberg AIR Program until sufficient funds can once again be built for the payment of resident artists' stipends. Fall 2016 Resident Artist Marie Marcano will be the last Salzberg Resident until the residency's operating account balance is sufficiently positive. Watch this page for news on resumption of the program. We will also make announcements via the JCBA News (email), as well as the Book Arts Discussion List, the Letterpress Discussion List, and the JCBA Facebook page. Marie Marcano started making books while pursuing her BFA in graphic design at the Corcoran School
of the Arts and Design in Washington, DC. Having moved to Miami in 2002 and has
been an active member of the South Florida Calligraphy Guild since 2003.
Ingrid Schindall is a passionate and productive print-maker
and book artist based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She
has a persistent and methodical yet also curious and
experimental studio practice. Her prints and artists'
books have been exhibited internationally and throughout
the east coast.
Brooke Frank is an emerging artist living and working in South
Florida. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with her BFA in
painting from Florida Atlantic University, and spent
most of her undergraduate degree as a student assistant
at the Jaffe Center for Book Arts.
Stephanie Wolff has a long history with the book
arts, both in the creation of books and their conservation. She worked
for nearly ten years in conservation at Preservation Services and the
Book Arts Workshop at Dartmouth College Library in Hanover, New Hampshire,
where she developed excellent bench skills.
Julia Arredondo is the 5th Helen Saltzberg Artist in Residence
at the Jaffe Center. She is a Texas native who runs
Vice Versa Press, an
independently run printmaking and publishing entity. Julia travels,
makes zines, and makes prints based on love, life, turmoil, and
everyday sillies.
Lorna Galloway is a recent graduate of Florida Atlantic
University, receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a
concentration in Printmaking. In
her work, she primarily focuses on four color screenprints.
Paula Marie Gourley is a native of Carmel, California and an
unrepentant Francophile. She founded Pelegaya Press & Paperworks in
1975 and spent years learning to bind books from some of the world's
best mentors.
Tom Virgin is the 4th Helen Saltzberg Artist in Residence at
the Jaffe Center. Tom Virgin is
the proprietor of Extra Virgin Press,
established during a third residency at the Anderson
Center in Red Wing, Minnesota in 2013.
Dorothy Simpson Krause is a painter, collage artist and bookmaker who
incorporates digital mixed media. She is Professor Emeritus at
Massachusetts College of Art and the author of Book + Art:
Handcrafting Artists' Books.
