Policy on Printing and Photocopying

The FAU Libraries are not funded to provide free printing for library users. Printing has been defined as an optional service which must be self-supporting. Users are encouraged to download to floppy disks, e-mail to home computers, or copy by hand the information they need. However, printing for a fee is available where desired. Fees are set to break even on costs.

The Wimberly Library uses the University's Owl Card system for printing from computerized reference tools, photocopiers, and microform reader/printers. Money can be added to Owl Cards in the Reference Department, the Current Periodicals and Microforms area, and the Lobby, or a patron may purchase a visitor's card from these same machines. The cost of the cards (currently $1) is given entirely to the University Copy Center, which is part of the Auxiliary Services Department of the University. The library does not own these cards and cannot refund their price to people who inadvertently purchase these cards. The cards can be used at the University's other copy machines and for other campus card services.

The funds generated from printing are used to pay for toner, print cartridges/ink, and miscellaneous costs associated with printing and copying, such as maintenance and repair charges.

Questions regarding public service policies should be directed to Dawn Smith, Assistant Director of Public Services.
