PC Use Policy

Internet accessible PC's are intended for the use of FAU faculty, students and staff. Nonaffiliated users are welcome to use this equipment when not needed by FAU faculty, students and staff.

The FAU Libraries provide public use computers to facilitate the University community's access to electronic information. The primary purpose of our electronic service is for library-related research and/or study. IRM/AISS supports non-library related activities such as e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets etc. for FAU faculty, students and staff.

The Internet is a global information network and the Libraries cannot regulate the content or validity of the information accessed, nor the availability of any given site. Through the home pages, the Libraries attempt to provide links to resources that are useful, informative, relevant to the curriculum, and reliably accessible.

GUIDELINES FOR USE:

  1. Computers and networks are state assets. Use them in a responsible, ethical and lawful manner. Comply with local, state and federal laws (including copyright law) in accordance with University rules and policies. (see http://www.fau.edu/irm/c_policy.htm) and with applicable contracts including software licenses. Recreational, commercial or other activities not related to meeting academic information needs of Florida Atlantic University are strictly prohibited.

  2. When logging on to a PC, please ask the library staff for assistance.

  3. Respect the privacy of all files on the computer system. Do not alter or erase a file without explicit permission to do so. The ability to alter a file does not imply permission to do so.

  4. Deliberately crashing, vandalizing or otherwise disabling a computer or network, hampering performance, or consuming large amounts of system resources are serious offenses and may result in loss of library privileges and disciplinary action.

  5. Recreational uses--such as accessing chat rooms, playing computer games and displaying pornographic materials--are strictly forbidden.

  6. Users are expected to provide their own disks if they wish to save files. All files are to be downloaded on to floppy discs. Downloaded files will not be maintained on the computers' hard drives.

  7. Be considerate of those around you by not bringing up material that others might reasonably consider offensive, controversial or inappropriate.

  8. Please report any violations of University or Library computer policies to a library staff member immediately.

  9. Please be advised that entering personal or confidential information such as a social security number or a credit card number may not be kept confidential on any public terminal. Proceed at your own risk.

Questions regarding public service policies should be directed to Dawn Smith, Assistant Director of Public Services.
