Library Building FAU Libraries
Children Policy

The Florida Atlantic University, S.E. Wimberly Library exists primarily to serve the teaching and research needs of students, faculty, staff and other  scholars who make up the University community.  Neither our building nor our services were designed to meet the requirements or needs of children as public libraries do.

Accordingly, we urge you not to bring your children into the Library except briefly, to avoid great inconvenience to yourself, while you conduct your business within the Library. Furthermore, we cannot under any circumstance, permit unsupervised children in the Library.

If you must bring a small child into the library with you, please observe the following precautions:

  1. Be very careful of potential hazards such as the elevators, electrical equipment and, especially, the open staircase.  The staircase is very tempting to some children and potentially very dangerous for them.
  2. Children are not allowed at the computer workstations or other equipment located in any area of the Library.  This expensive equipment is provided for scholarly research only.
  3. Do your best to make sure your child does not disturb others.
  4. Please make sure to keep your child at your side at all times.  If a child is not with a parent, for the safety of the child we will ask campus police to assume responsibility for the child.

Questions regarding public service policies should be directed to Dawn Smith, Assistant Director of Public Services.
