Writing a Research Paper

The following are suggested steps for writing a research paper:

  1. Choose a topic
  2. Gather information
      Begin with general sources
      Search the Catalog using appropriate key words
      Consider both Reference & Circulating Books
      Relevant Indexes for articles can be found on the library's Subject Pages
      Ask a librarian for help if needed.  Live chat is available.
      Begin to organize your findings. Consider using note cards.
      Build a source list according to the required style.
  3. Write an outline
    1. Introduction
        APA's Publication Manual, 5th edition, gives an excellent description (1.08) of what an introduction should contain.
    2. Body
        Be prepared to define, extend or support the focus of your paper.
    3. Conclusion
    4. Works Cited
  4. Write a rough draft
  5. Revision
  6. Final Copy
