MacArthur Campus Library  »  Information for Faculty

Welcome to the online guide for faculty from the MacArthur Campus Library staff.
Our intention is to help you and your students be successful in the FAU library system.
Please do not hesitate to ask for assistance.

Art Slides
Descriptions of many of the slide sets are here. The slides are in the MacArthur Campus Library and can be checked out to current faculty for classroom use.

Audio-Visual Support
The MacArthur Campus Library no longer provides audio visual support. Please send your requests for audio visual equipment to Phil Snowhite. For the best service, place your request 24 hours in advance.

Book Ordering
Please contact library staff (scroll down to John D. MacArthur Campus Library) if you would like to know more about the book ordering process. We welcome faculty involvement. We can use your course outline as an order list if you drop it off at the library. Directions for completing an Order Request Form are available online. We also offer an electronic alternative for your recommendations. Visit our Suggestion Form for Books and Other Media.

Circulation Policies
Your Owl card is your library card. If you do not have an Owl card, the library can make a temporary library card for you. For an Owl card, please speak to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Joe Isadore (6-8521). Joe's office is SR 119. The Circulation Department Policies page has information about eligibility for library cards, length of time books can be checked out, renewals, and so on.

Computers & Computer Lab
In addition to library databases, the computers in the Lab have Internet access, Microsoft Office applications and IRM applications. Students will need to know their FAU netID and password to access the IRM applications. Our computers outside the lab have Internet access and the latest Microsoft Office applications.

Printing on all of our computers is fifteen cents/page and requires an Owl card or visitor card.

Six wireless laptops are available for check-out to current students and faculty on a 3-hour Reserve basis. These laptops are library use only. See also Laptop Loan Agreement.

Faculty may request use of the Lab for instruction on an occasional basis.  The library requests 7-day advance notice for scheduling purposes.  Please contact Ethan Allen (6-8030) or Cathy Scheid (6-8685) for availability.

Database Instruction
With over 300 databases, instruction is generally necessary for new students and faculty. Since our database collection is still growing, repeat instruction for everyone can be useful. Faculty may request sessions based on their course needs. We are happy to personalize these instruction sessions so that your students are as prepared as possible when they attempt to do their research from home. To be sure that library staff is available for special sessions, please make an appointment. Classes are held in the library's computer lab.

Food and Drink in the Library
Food of any kind (including candy) and drinks in open containers are not allowed in the library. Drinks in bottles with screw-on caps are ok. Drinks in open containers and food are allowed in the lobby of the library and other study areas on campus, for those who prefer to eat while studying. The FAU Libraries' Policies page has complete information on all library policies.

Interlibrary Loan, Book Renewal, and Fines
If this library does not have what you need, the Interlibrary Loan department in Boca Raton will search world-wide for you. A courier service delivers ILL requests Monday - Friday. Optimum turnaround time for a book requested from the Boca Raton campus is three days and seven days for a journal article. The farther away the item is, the longer it will take to arrive here. Please encourage your students to plan ahead.

Most of our online databases offer the option of ILL request directly from the database. The database you are working on may indicate that the journal is not available in full text. However, that article may be in full text on another database. To avoid delays, check our Comprehensive Journals List to be sure the item is not available online or in paper in our library. The ILL department will not fill requests that are available online or in the Jupiter library.  To check the status of a request, go to ILLiad's Main Menu and select "View/Edit Outstanding Requests". With a few exceptions, ILL is a free service.

To borrow library materials through Interlibrary loan, FAU faculty, students and staff must first register for an ILLiad account. ILLiad is a streamlined online ILL process that lets you view the status of your requests.

Books from libraries other than FAU can generally be checked out for one month. When a book is loaned, the lending library expects that it will be returned by the due date. When books are not returned, the lending library may refuse to lend to FAU in the future. Please help us by returning your books on time. If you need the book longer than the loan period, please ask for an extension several days before the book is due. The Interlibrary Loan department in Boca Raton will contact the lending library to find out if an extension is possible. Books borrowed from other libraries can be renewed only by following the above procedure.

Library books owned by FAU Libraries cannot be renewed over the phone, but they may be renewed online. Online renewal service can be found at http://fau.catalog.fcla.edu/fa.jsp . Click on "Your Account" in the upper right-hand corner. You are able to renew your books online up to three times. After that, you will need to bring your books to the Library for renewal (and then you are eligible for three more online renewals). CAUTION: Please be aware that the system will allow you to renew, even though books may be overdue. Noting the due dates prior to renewal will help you determine whether you will be fined. The system will not display the amount of your fine. Reserve material and items that have been recalled or have a hold on them cannot be renewed. Holds and recalls can be placed online within catalog records.
The overdue fine is 25 cents/day up to a maximum of $5.00. You may also be charged $51.15 if the book is overdue so long as to be considered missing. Blocks will be placed on the library cards of borrowers having interlibrary loan items more than 7 days past due. If a book that has been declared missing is returned, the $51.15 fine is eliminated, but the $5.00 late fee remains. FAU books that are overdue can be renewed, if a hold has not been placed on the book. The late fee remains for overdue books that are renewed.

Reserves: Copyright, How to Place Reserves and Electronic Reserves
Items placed on Reserve must be in compliance with copyright. Please see the libraries' Reserve Information for Faculty page about reserve materials and copyright law. This summary is not meant to be a legal interpretation of the copyright law.

The JDM Campus Library provides Reserves services for classes held at this campus. Marilee Brown is your contact person for this service. Reserves can be dropped off at the library any time we are open. You will be asked to complete a form for each item and to pick up your Reserve items at the end of the term.  The library requires a three-day minimum for processing before materials are available to students.

Download reserve forms in PDF format:
Items, including a book chapter, can be placed online, making them available to students whether they are in the library or at home. E-reserve requests and materials should be sent to Reserve at the S. E. Wimberly Library in Boca Raton.
  • MAIL: Reserve - LY 137
  • PHONE: 561-297-2632
  • EMAIL: lyreserv@fau.edu
Electronic Reserves must also comply with copyright. Reserves placed electronically are accessed through ALEPH with your Owl card number.

Reserving DVDs & Videos
DVDs and videos owned by the Jupiter Campus library may be placed on Reserve for the entire term.  DVDs and videos coming from the Boca Raton campus Media Center may be loaned to Jupiter Reserve for a period of two weeks; conversely, items loaned to Boca Raton Reserves will be loaned for two weeks.  To ensure availability of DVDs and videos at time of need, faculty may provide dates or syllabi to Reserve staff who will then remove requested items from general circulation two weeks in advance of show date.  Submit requests in person or electronically, using the MacArthur Campus Media Reservation Request Form.

Videos, DVDs, & Books on Tape
The FAU Libraries (all campuses) have 8,000+ videos and DVDs. These titles can be located by an ALEPH search. The Advanced Screen allows a search by format.

Subject Videographies are available (Boca Raton Campus Library titles only).

For books on tape, see Media Center Collections. All books on tape are located at the Boca Raton Campus Library.
