Digital Environmental Resource Library (Miami-Dade Department of Environmental Resources Management) "Six hundred environmental e-books including many on the local Miami-Dade County or Florida environment and other issues relevant to this area." Hosted by St. Thomas University Library, some of the items selected were "fugitive" documents, which means that they were created by a government agency but never made part of the library depository system.
Endangered Species Coalition "As the guardian of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA), the Endangered Species Coalition (ESC) speaks on endangered species issues for some 380 environmental, conservation, religious, scientific, humane, sporting and business groups around the country. Our tools are public education, scientific information and citizen participation in all decisions affecting the fate of threatened and endangered species. Through extensive grassroots work, education, discussions with lawmakers, and the dissemination of information, we work to ensure that the Act itself as well as the species it protects, can be passed on safely into the future."
Florida Marine Research Institute "Through effective research and technical knowledge, we provide timely information and guidance to protect, conserve and manage Florida's marine and coastal resources."
International Information Programs (U.S. Department of State) This site gives policy information, reports, government agency information, publications and news.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (U.S. Department of Commerce) The NOAA site gives information on weather, climate, oceans, fisheries, research information, news and coastal information." NOAA's Mission is to describe and predict changes in the Earth's environment, and conserve and wisely manage the Nation's coastal and marine resources."
National Wetlands Research Center (Department of the Interior) "The National Wetlands Research Center is a source and clearinghouse of science information about wetlands in the United States and the world for fellow agencies, private entities, academia, and the public at large. Staff members obtain and provide this information by performing original scientific research and developing research results into literature and technological tools."
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Independent Agency under the Executive Branch) This site gives information about the EPA national and local offices. "EPA provides leadership in the nation's environmental science, research, education and assessment efforts. EPA works closely with other federal agencies, state and local governments, and Indian tribes to develop and enforce regulations under existing environmental laws. The Agency also works with industries and all levels of government in a wide variety of voluntary pollution prevention programs and energy conservation efforts."
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Department of the Interior) "Our mission is working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. Among its key functions, the Service enforces Federal wildlife laws , protects endangered species, manages migratory birds, restores nationally significant fisheries, conserves and restores wildlife habitat such as wetlands, and helps foreign governments with their international conservation efforts."
Environmental Organizations
Defenders of Wildlife "Defenders of Wildlife is dedicated to the protection of all native wild animals and plants in their natural communities. We focus our programs on what scientists consider two of the most serious environmental threats to the planet: the accelerating rate of extinction of species and the associated loss of biological diversity, and habitat alteration and destruction. Long known for our leadership on endangered species issues, Defenders of Wildlife also advocates new approaches to wildlife conservation that will help keep species from becoming endangered. Our programs encourage protection of entire ecosystems and interconnected habitats while protecting predators that serve as indicator species for ecosystem health."
Earthjustice "Earthjustice is a non-profit public interest law firm dedicated to protecting the magnificent places, natural resources, and wildlife of this earth and to defending the right of all people to a healthy environment. We bring about far-reaching change by enforcing and strengthening environmental laws on behalf of hundreds of organizations and communities."
Environment News Service
"The Environment News Service (ENS) exists to present late-breaking
environmental news in a fair and balanced manner. NS contributors around the
world cover issues and events that affect the environment such as:
legislation, politics, conferences, lawsuits, international agreements,
demonstrations, science and technology, public health, air quality, drinking
water, oceans and marine life, land use, wildlife, forests, natural
disasters, the indoor environment, hazardous materials, toxics, nuclear
issues, renewable energy, recycling, transportation, and environmental
economics."
Environmental Investigation Agency The Environmental Investigation Agency investigates and exposes incidents of environmental crime. This site offers environmental news, latest reports on their investigations, scientific publications on various topics .
Everglades Information Network "A service of Florida International University and other libraries and information providers to support research, restoration, and resource management of the Everglades."
Florida Center for Environmental Studies "The Florida Center for Environmental Studies represents the ten state universities and four major private universities. The center acts as a facilitator and co-coordinator of research and training related to the environment and as a locus for environmental information. Grounding its activities in the Florida sub-tropical environment, its mandate encompasses global tropical and sub-tropical environments especially the issues and problems of water dominated ecosystems."
Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute "Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution is dedicated to exploring the world's oceans, integrating the science and technology of the sea with the needs of humankind. Our staff of over 250 includes scientists, engineers, mariners and support personnel. We are involved in research and education in the marine sciences; biological, chemical, and environmental sciences; marine biomedical sciences; marine mammal conservation; aquaculture; and ocean engineering. We have a wide variety of educational programs and products to raise public awareness of the marine environment, illustrating how the health of our planet is inextricably linked to the state of our oceans."
IUCN The World Conservation Union. "IUCN is a unique Union. Its members from some 140 countries include over 70 States, 100 government agencies, and 750-plus NGOs. More than 10,000 internationally-recognised scientists and experts from more than 180 countries volunteer their services to its six global commissions. Its 1000 staff members in offices around the world are working on some 500 projects.
National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) "The Council promotes a new crosscutting approach to environmental science that integrates interdisciplinary research; scientific assessment; communication of science-based information to decision makers and the general public; and environmental education. As a neutral science-based organization, NCSE promotes science and its relationship with decision making only, and does not take positions on environmental issues themselves. NCSE carries out all of its programs in collaboration with other organizations."
National Science Digital Library "NSDL is a digital library of exemplary resource collections and services, organized in support of science education at all levels. Starting with a partnership of NSDL-funded projects, NSDL is emerging as a center of innovation in digital libraries as applied to education, and a
Rare Species Conservatory Foundation "The Rare Species Conservatory Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving biological diversity. RSCF is dedicated to developing conservation strategies for saving endangered plants and animals, with the ultimate objective of restoring critical species in the wild. Efforts are multidisciplinary, integrating several approaches: Captive Breeding and Management is seen as a vital, last resort for saving some of the rarest animals on Earth. RSCF's programs strive to maintain genetic diversity for species whose populations are dwindling due to habitat destruction, poaching and other human influences."
