Current Position

Dean of University Libraries. Responsible for all aspects of running a multi-campus library system of one of Florida's eleven state universities. The main campus library in Boca Raton and three branch sites in Palm Beach and Broward counties have a full-time staff of 112 (librarians, clerical, and administrative/professional employees). Budget for 2004-05 exceeds 7.5 million dollars. From July 1, 1990 through September 1, 1993, responsibilities also included Learning Resources area, with 29 employees in Instructional Television, Graphics, Photography, and Media Center.

Previous Employment

BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY, 1984-87

Associate Dean of Libraries and Learning Resources. Served also as Acting Dean, 1984-86. Responsibilities included grants and fund raising, planning, public relations, staff development, and branch libraries. Shared general responsibility for management of all activities within University Library (including 5 branch libraries), Center for Archival Collections, Institute for Great Lakes Research, and Instructional Media Center. Overall salaries and operating budgets of units totalled 4 million dollars, including library materials budget of 1.4 million dollars. Overall staff included 31 faculty, 10 contract professionals, and 58 classified staff. Instituted college-wide system of goals and objectives; oversaw automation efforts, including upgrade of existing online system and introduction of personal computers into the work environment and instructional area. As Acting Dean for a two-year period, had full budgetary and personnel authority for Libraries and Learning Resources, and attendant responsibilities (e.g. presided over Library and College-wide Faculty Meetings, Library Council, and Library Advisory Committee). Served on Deans' Council, Undergraduate Council, and Graduate Council. Joint appointment with the Department of English as Associate Professor.

MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY, 1980-84

Head of Reference and Government Documents Departments (Assistant Head of Reference, 1980-81). Supervised 14 professional librarians, 5 support staff, 25-30 students. Documents added to Reference responsibilities in 1982. Responsible for all personnel and budget administration, collection development, and overall coordination of Reference and Documents work with that of other units. Service also as regular working Reference Librarian, performing all unit functions such as desk work, library instruction, and database searching. Service on many committees, such as Readers' Service Administrative Group, Serials Selection Committee, and Approval Plan Committee (Chair). Chaired User Needs Task Force in ARL OMS Public Services Study.

ALBION COLLEGE, 1976-80

Reference Librarian at college library, providing all public service functions. In joint capacity as Assistant Professor of English, taught one course each semester, developing specialty in Technical Writing. As Reference Librarian, turned a library with no instruction program into one with an active program reaching almost every department. Initiated database search service. Reorganized college archives collection, and provided reference services for it. Created much instructional material. Awarded National Science Foundation--Earlham College Library instruction grant to initiate instruction in Geology. Served on Faculty Grievance Committee. Served as Academic Counselor for three semesters. Promoted to Assistant Professor in 1977.

UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO, 1974-76

Supervised medical library and provided reference assistance at Clarke Institute for Psychiatric Research, evenings, 1975-76. Teaching Assistant, Social Science Research Methods course, Faculty of Library Science methodology. Research Assistant, Centre for Research in Librarianship, 1975-76: helped design and pretest several faculty research projects; served as investigator on project to investigate quality of library services in Regina, Sask., Summer 1976.

UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER, 1970-74

Supervisor, Circulation Department, evenings and weekends, 1971-74: supervised circulation functions and university library building from Friday, 5 p.m. through Sunday 10 p.m., as well as student staff. Gift Book Coordinator, part-time appointment, 1973-74: performed all searching, most selection, and some processing of gift materials, working with technical services staff. Conducted public book sales, and negotiated with both donors and faculty.

Graduate Assistant, English Department, 1970-73: taught eight different undergraduate classes, both day and evening sessions.

In library school, studied with Richard Landon (Head, Fisher Rare Book Library), and won Ontario Library Association prize for best work in courses on rare books and bibliography. For the past 15 years I have been teaching English Romantic writers, Shakespeare, and writing courses at Florida Atlantic University on an adjunct basis.

Current library interests include administration, reference services, library instruction, and electronic access to information. Collection development is a strong area of interest. Teach a Seminar on Academic Libraries and a course on Library Administration for the University of South Florida M.L.S. program periodically.
