Position Summary:

FAU Libraries seeks a Medical Liaison and Outreach Librarian. Reporting to the Head of the Medical and Health Sciences Collections & User Services Department, the Medical Liaison and Outreach Librarian will assist in department and library activities.

Fosters positive working relationships and develops innovative, interactive instructional materials.

Provides research assistance and proactively promotes library services and resources for training, curriculum support, and research for all FAU, Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine (COM) faculty, staff, students, and affiliates.

FAU Libraries house approximately 3.7 million items and provide access to over 80,000 electronic journals, nearly 500 databases, and a growing collection of e-books and streaming videos.

The Libraries house many distinctive collections including artist's books, sound recordings, print music, rare books and manuscripts, and University Archives.

The Digital Library creates online collections from unique materials from Special Collections and University Archives and serves as the University's repository for the intellectual output created on campus.

The Libraries offer multifaceted instructional services including workshops, research consultations, tutorials and webcasts as well as broad-based creative outreach programming that encourages student and public engagement.

The Libraries maintain formal relationships with the Center for Research Libraries, the State University Libraries (through the Florida Virtual Campus) and area libraries in the Southeast Florida Library Information Network.

The Libraries have an annual budget of approximately $8 million with over 90 faculty and staff to support its mission.

Medical and Health Sciences Collections and User Services The predominant aim of the Medical and Health Sciences Collections and User Services department is to support the curricula, instructional, and research needs of the Faculty, staff, and students of the FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine [COM].

The department is currently staffed by two medical librarian positions. The department maintains primary offices within the reference section of the Wimberly Library building on the Boca Raton campus, as well as an office in the College of Medicine that is staffed a minimum of ten hours per week.

The medical librarians design, implement, and teach sections of the evidence based medicine curriculum within the Foundations of Medicine courses, sit on various standing and ad hoc committees within the College of Medicine, assist with the research needs of Faculty and graduate students, and implement programs designed to support the overall mission and vision of the College of Medicine.

The department is also responsible for training and access matters for affiliate faculty, most of whom are located off-campus in hospitals, private practices, and health departments. The collection development component of the department incorporates both clinical and basic sciences as well as medical education and affiliate requirements.

Position is a non-tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant University Librarian on a 12-month contract renewal basis. Please see http://www.fau.edu/hr/Benefits/index.php for additional benefits information.

Required Qualifications:
  • A Master's degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent required.
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills required.
  • Demonstrated initiative in work assignments & in fostering positive working relationships required.
  • Skilled in current database searching and Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills with a high level of professionalism and exceptional work ethic.
  • Evident desire for lifelong learning and for contributing to the profession through scholarly research and communication.
  • Ability to analyze and adapt to change in an ever-evolving and growing institution to best meet the needs of the organization.
  • Experience working in an academic library setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of current trends in academic medical libraries and knowledge of educational technologies preferred.
  • Working knowledge of, and aptitude to learn, website authoring and design tools preferred.
