"Treasures by Number" features the rich resources of the S.E. Wimberly Library collections, displaying materials written more than 200 years ago. This exhibit depicts the distinct Library of Congress Classification system by which Florida Atlantic University Libraries shelve their books and serials. The Library of Congress Classification system was developed at the Library of Congress in the early 1900s and is used by large libraries around the world.
The Libraries also use several other classification systems for some of their unique collections:
- United States documents are organized by the Superintendent of Documents system, SuDocs for short. This system was designed to follow the organization of the United States government and changes when the organization of the government changes. All numbers in the system are whole number even after the period. Florida Documents have a similar classification system.
- The Jaffe Collection has a special classification system designed by Mata Jaffe that describes each of that Collection’s items in depth.
- The Audio Visual Collection is arranged by accession number. Films are arranged in the order in which they were received.
If you are interested in knowing more about any of these classification systems or NEED HELP in finding library materials, ask at the reference desk
