Art Historian, Wendy M. Blazier, spoke on 11 centuries of Islamic Art Wednesday, May 28 at 10:30 a.m. in Florida Atlantic University's Performing Arts Building 101, a part of the new Schmidt College of Arts and Humanites complex. This presentation covered Islamic Art from the 7th century to the 18th century.
Blazier received her M.A. in art history and criticism from Florida State University. Her thesis entitled "A Study of Twenty Ayyubid and Mamluk Gilt and Enamelled Glass Vessels in the Museum of Arab Art, Cairo" resulted from her study at the American University at Cairo and the Florida State University Study Center in Florence. During her Research Assistantship from Harvard she studied Islamic Art within Bernard Berenson's private library of Oriental and Islamic art texts in Villa I Tatti, Settignano, Italy.
In conjunction with this event is a Middle Eastern Art Exhibition in the Wimberly Library, Boca Raton Campus. It features books which pertain to Armenian, Coptic, Islamic and Judaic art. The volumes focus on miniatures, calligraphy and architecture. The display also includes information on oriental carpets, and some glassware, pottery and metal work. The displays may be viewed from 8 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and noon to midnight Sunday during May, June and July.
