At this time, SciFinder Scholar is only accessible from the FAU campuses.  This product is available on all of the public PCs in the Reference Department of the Library (Boca campus).

Please follow the instructions below to download and install this product on an FAU campus PC.  Please email Amy Kornblau, Systems Librarian or call her at 561-297-3789 to request the User Name, Password, and site.prf file you will need to access this resource.

[Upgrading:  If you would like to upgrade to the new version, you do not need to uninstall the previous version of SciFinder Scholar before installing SciFinder Scholar 2007.   Please follow the directions below.]

You may find it easier to print out these directions as well as the Downloading and Installing SciFinder Scholar (2007 Edition) Page (link provided below) before you begin.

  1. Click on the Downloading and Installing SciFinder Scholar (2007 Edition) Page. This page will provide you with instructions on downloading and installing SciFinder Scholar 2007 software on Windows or Macintosh (PowerMac).

You will be prompted for a User Name and Password before the downloads will run. If you are upgrading to SciFinder Scholar 2007, please note that the User Name and Password used to download the previous version of SciFinder Scholar will not work in the new version.

Please email Amy Kornblau or call her at 561-297-3789 to request the User Name and Password for SciFinder Scholar 2007.

If you are downloading SciFinder Scholar for the first time, you will be asked to save the file to a temporary folder (For example: C:\Temp). If you are downloading over the previous version of SciFinder Scholar, save the file in the original SciFinder Scholar folder - the Sfschlr folder or the name you chose for the program's folder.

  2. After downloading, the software must be installed.  The installation options are provided on the Downloading and Installing SciFinder Scholar (2007 Edition Page).  If you are installing over the previous version of SciFinder Scholar, browse to the Sfschlr folder or the name you chose for the program's folder, double click sfs2007 and click 'Ok.'  You will be overwriting the original SciFinder Scholar files in this directory.

    Note:

When asked to click the type of Setup you prefer, choose "Typical."

When asked, "Do you have a disk labeled Custom Site Files?" Click "No."

When asked, "Do you want to install SciFinder Scholar Toolbar now?" Choose "Yes" or "No"(Windows Only).

The installation will be complete when you click on the "Finish" button.

  3. After downloading and installing SciFinder Scholar 2007 software, you will need to download the site.prf file.   (If you are upgrading your version of SciFinder Scholar and installed SciFinder Scholar 2007 in the original Sfschlr folder or the name you chose for the program's folder, SciFinder Scholar 2007 will work with the existing site.prf file.) Please email Amy Kornblau or call her at 561-297-3789 to request the PC or Macintosh version of the site.prf file.  (This step must be done prior to opening the program you have just installed or you will receive the following error: "SciFinder is unable to establish a session with the server at CAS...")

If you receive the site.prf file as an attachment:

  1. Choose "Save File" or "Save it to disc."
  2. Click the drop down arrow next to the "Save in" box.
  3. If you chose the default location when installing the SciFinder Scholar 2007 software, Click "C:/" (or the drive where you saved this program)
  4. Click the Sfschlr folder (or the name you chose for the program's folder)
  5. Click "Save."

If you receive the site.prf file on disc:

Copy the site.prf file from the disc into the Sfschlr folder or the name you chose for the program's folder.

You should now be able to access SciFinder Scholar 2007 under Programs on the Start menu of your PC.  (If you find that you have the previous version of SciFinder Scholar and SciFinder Scholar 2007 listed under Programs, both will actually take you to the latest version.  You may delete the previous SciFinder Scholar listing as it is a duplicate and does not reflect the name of the current version.)
