ciao: columbia international affairs online

We have selected the CIAO (Columbia International Affairs Online) as our Database of the Month for September. This resource is designed to be a comprehensive source for research and theory in international affairs. From 1991 onward, CIAO publishes a full suite of scholarly resources that includes working papers from university research institutes, occasional papers series from nongovernmental organizations, foundation-funded research projects, proceedings from conferences, books, journals, monographs and policy briefs.

Developed as a collaborative effort between the Columbia University libraries and Columbia University Press with a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, CIAO is an excellent resource for teaching materials. For example, CIAO offers some of the following resources:

original case studies by leading international affairs experts
course packs of background readings for history and political science classes
special features, such as the analysis of a bin Laden recruitment tape with video

Other highlights include:

Updated monthly, CIAO offers full-text access to publications not found elsewhere such as think tank working papers and policy briefings.
CIAO contains both a schedule of scholarly events in foreign affairs and security policy and an atlas with maps and country data.
Some of the organizations represented include the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the Center for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence, and the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding.
Users may subscribe to a monthly electronic mailing list, which highlights new developments on CIAO.
