FAU Libraries Database of the Month

The Archivision Digital Research Library is a recent addition to FAU’s electronic resources collection, and can be accessed through the ARTstor database. This extensive digital collection contains more than 120,000 images photographed personally by Scott Gilchrist, a professional architect and photographer. FAU is fortunate enough to have access to 28,000 of these images, with plans to expand the collection.

The Archivision base collection contains 16,000 images including a primary focus on:

• Italian and Medieval Renaissance architecture
• Baroque architecture
• Modern architecture
• Greek architecture
• Roman architecture
• Images of gardens, parks, cityscapes and city skylines and much more

Module 1 includes 6,000 images and completes the collection of:

• Renaissance and Baroque Roman architecture
• Ancient Egyptian architecture
• Islamic materials from Egypt
• Contemporary images shot in Vancouver, Montreal, Seattle and Boston

Module 2 contains an additional 6,000 images including:

• More than 700 images of Andrea Palladio materials with access to Palladio’s plans, sections and elevations
• Approximately 299 Scamozzi etchings
• At least 299 images of Hector Guimard’s work
• Islamic architecture in Turkey
• Contemporary images shot in Florida, New York, Montreal and Washington D.C.

The Archivision Digital Research Library has features which enable the user to enlarge images for closer viewing, as well as save, print and email images to a personal account.  The user has the ability to incorporate digital images into classroom power point presentations, or instruction sessions. This resource will be most beneficial to students in architecture, landscape architecture, planning, archaeology, photography, art and art history, but is worthwhile for anyone interested in viewing beautiful photography and landscape scenery.
