Yiskor Bikher (Memorial Books)
Yiskor bikher, or Memorial Books, were written after the Holocaust by
survivors. The purpose of these books was to document the shtetls (Jewish
villages of Central and Eastern Europe) that were destroyed
and record the names of those Jews killed by Nazis or Nazi
sympathizers. Yiskor books are a source of valuable information about life in
Jewish towns before the Holocaust and for genealogical
research. These books may contain
biographies, photographs, maps and other items of historical interest.
The Special Collections staff welcomes the use of these books by appointment or by e-mail. Most of these
books are in Hebrew or Yiddish; please be aware that
transliteration or translation services are not available.
Photocopies or electronic scans may be requested, but may
not be ready the same day. When requesting information by
email, please give variable spellings.
