Overview
Special Collections & Archives
holds a variety of music collections, including rare
classical scores, manuscripts and personal collections, cantorial
scores, popular sheet music, Jewish music of many genres
including over 4,000 pieces of Yiddish sheet music, as well
as monographs and reference
resources.
Richard Beattie Davis Music Collection
The Davis Collection focuses on
classical music, with an emphasis on piano, and Russian
composers. The collection reflects the research
interests pursued by Mr. Davis throughout his lifetime,
including: the compositions of
Hummel and of von Henselt;
Russian composers of the late nineteenth and early
twentieth centuries; Beethoven first editions;
publications of Belaieff; publications of Bessel; and
the only archives in the US of Thomas Pitfield.
Jewish Music Collections
The
Cantors' archival collections include those of Rabbis
Ario Hyams, and Abraham Rose, Cantors Zvi Aroni, Asher
Herman, Saul Meisels, Stuart Kanas, Shabtai Ackerman,
and Morton Pliskin.
Jewish Music Collections include scores and sheet music
from Yiddish theater, Yiddish folk songs, and other
secular sources. European and North American liturgical
and sacred music is also held. Both sheet music and
manuscripts are available for study and performance,
within Intellectual Property limitations (see below for details).
General Music Collections
The
General Sheet Music Collections represent popular music of the
early 20th century and includes popular songs and dance
band orchestrations. Also included are collections of
opera and classical music which are distinct from the
Davis Collection.
