"You and I were born from folding," says origami artist Paul
Jackson. Think about folding. Origami artists fold paper; we know
this: paper folding is at the core of origami's definition. But
folding also exists in nature. DNA folds. The vital proteins in
cells fold. Sound waves, in their way, fold the air, creating the
disturbances that translate to sound. Geometric folding is
everywhere around us.
The Vanessa Gould documentary "Between the Folds" (Green Fuse Films,
2009) is the inspiration for our exhibition. This film explores the
artistic importance of origami and then moves on to origami's
connections to the world beyond art: to math, to science, to
engineering. "All of these paperfolders," Gould says, "artists and
scientists alike, whether producing beautiful objects or finding new
ways to fold airbags or space telescopes, are involved in a creative
effort."
In "Born from Folding," we bring together some of the artists from
the film with other paperfolding artists from around the world as we
further explore how a flat sheet of paper can evolve through
creative effort into something completely different. To further
enhance the conversation, artists' books from the Jaffe Collection
are also included in the exhibition: books that deal with science,
math, and engineering as only artists' books can.
Great complexity can often be found in simple actions: like the
folding of a sheet of paper.
