Instructor: Dan Gorostiaga
Sunday September 29, 2019
1 to 4 PM
Instructor: Kristin Beck
Zines have been around since the 1950’s, with topics ranging from science fiction to punk rock, poetry and personal writing, graffiti and art, and on to zines about work, life on the fringe, health, anarchism, feminism, race, cats... and everything in between. What all zines have in common is that their writers and editors feel like they have something important to say that they would like to share with others. As for content, expect lots of photocopying, collaging, drawing, carving, and writing. Use any or all of these techniques. Your voice makes your zine. All levels; class limit 12.
FAU Students: Your tuition is FREE… but you must register ahead of time. Free tuition for FAU students is made possible by grants from Jerry’s Artarama in Deerfield Beach and Florida Atlantic University's Center for Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies.
Everyone Else: Saturday workshop with Dan Gorostiaga: $50; Sunday workshop with Kristin Beck: $50 ,or take both workshops for the special price of $75 for the weekend!
Advance registration is required for all JCBA workshops. To register, email JCBA Director John Cutrone at email@example.com. Sending your email will begin the registration process.
ABOUT the INSTRUCTORS
Saturday Instructor Dan Gorostiaga works in various media (drawing, collage, printmaking), and publishes his ongoing visual zine, “Somewhere Btwn.”, on his Marginal Man Works label (www.marginalmanworks.com). He's also a musician, playing in the band CAVITY.
Sunday Instructor Kristin Beck’s work is influenced by the vibrant culture of her native South Florida. Her use of bold colors, recurring patterns, and strong lines reflect the energy of the subtropics. Her most recurring theme is humor, which leaves its mark on many pieces from her handmade zines to paintings to mixed media pieces.
THANK YOU to our sponsors!
Free tuition for FAU students is made possible by the generosity of Jerry’s Artarama in Deerfield Beach and Florida Atlantic University's Center for Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies.
Thanks also to FAU librarian Simone Clunie. These workshops would not have been made possible without her direct support. Be sure to check out her Zines Exhibition in the far west cases on the 2nd Floor West of the Wimberly Library this fall!
