SHADOW PUPPETS
Instructor Jeanne Jaffe

Saturday & Sunday September 7 & 8, 2019
10 AM to 4 PM each day
Jaffe Book Arts Gallery FAU Library
Class limit: 10

JCBA’s current exhibition, “Building Stories: Alternative Storytelling,” has its roots in two puppetry classes that Jeanne Jaffe taught in China in 2018, and we are so pleased to offer you a variation of those classes in a workshop setting here at the Jaffe. Shadow puppetry is an ancient form of storytelling using flat articulated cut-out figures. These shadow puppets are held between a source of light and a translucent screen.

In this weekend workshop, students will learn the basics of constructing shadow puppets from poster board, Tyvek, and imagination. Historical and artists’ examples will be presented in a brief slide lecture, and we'll also review the patterns for the construction of a small shadow puppet theater, and discuss the potential of video animations. At the end, we will share our stories through our own imagined characters and shadow play––a mesmerizing and magical storytelling technique with a long history in countries all around the world.

This is a great workshop for teachers, artists, animators, children, and anyone interested in engaging in imaginative and inventive forms of storytelling. All levels; no experience necessary.
