Basics, Patterns, Transfers
Instructor Merike Van Zanten
Saturday & Sunday,
February 29 & March 1, 2020 9 AM to 4 PM
JCBA's Book & Paper Studio at Historic Building T6
Class limit: 8
If you’ve had classes with Merike Van Zanten before, this one will be different, for here are new techniques in Eco Printing. Day One of this workshop covers basics for paper and leather, including how to best choose plants, papers, and leather, along with information on chemicals used to secure and enhance color permanently, so that prints are stable. You’ll learn how to layer stacks and bundles of prints for steaming, and we’ll discuss the construction of several convenient and inexpensive steaming options. Day two brings new techniques: eco printing pastes to stencil and stamp images, transfers of images onto paper. For leather, patterned resists to build background interest, and carriers to transfer color. No experience necessary.

Merike Van Zanten, JCBA’s 2018/19 Salzberg Artist in Residence, specializes in ecoprinting, a technique of extracting color and images from plants and metals through steam. Merike’s art is wide-ranging but focuses on hand papermaking and artists’ books, as well––many incorporating found materials. She revisits JCBA this year from her home in the Netherlands.
