10 AM to 2 PM
JCBA's Book & Paper Studio at Historic Building T6

Collage, from the French word “coller," meaning “to glue.” In this workshop, we’ll be making collages on paper from all manner of scraps: you might use magazine and newspaper clippings, theater tickets, handmade papers, photographs, envelope fragments, portions of other artwork or text, and even paint. Whether you consider yourself to be an artist or not, creating a collage can be just what the doctor ordered for reducing stress, delighting your spirit, letting go of perfectionism, and most of all, givng your inner child permission to play.

We'll talk briefly about collage and collage papers, and then working from a variety of paper “fodder” (materials), we will spend some time cutting and tearing paper, do a few warm-up exercises, then move on to a few structured exercises. After a short break, we'll make a couple of small collaborative collages, a playing card collage, and we’ll close the workshop by making one or two miniature artist trading card (ATC) collages to keep for ourselves as well as trade with one another. We'll even talk about how to frame your collages if you're so inclined. You are encouraged to bring your own magazines, old papers, unwanted mail, photographs, etc.

Instructors

Jeff Ursillo and Jennifer Isham are both longtime and accomplished paper artists, not to mention longtime participants in Jaffe Center for Book Arts classes and activities. Jennifer has been a crafter and papercrafter since childhood. She loves making handmade greeting cards and paper collage. More often than not, her 25+ penpals can expect to receive a handwritten letter, small paper collage surprise tucked inside one of her handmade cards. Jeff's love of handmade crafts goes back to childhood. He has been making handcrafted journals and greeting cards for a number of years, and particularly enjoys making ones that require precise measuring and paper manipulation. Three dimensional papercrafting projects and bookbinding are also favorites of his. In addition to his skills as a paper artist, Jeff is also a mineralogist who has been cutting cabochons for jewelry for over 20 years.
