This workshop will introduce participants to new and innovative book structures that have been developed or explored in depth by the instructors, while at the same time teaching the basic bookbinding skills required to create them. Participants will make two of the artists' book structures described in the Thomas's book "More Making Books By Hand" published in 2004 by Quarry/Rockport Publishers.

One seat in this workshop is available to an FAU student for just the cost of materials ($20) thanks to funds raised in memory of Dorothy Hamilton, who loved JCBA’s monthly Real Mail Fridays letter writing socials. To be considered for this seat, you must be a current FAU student and send an email to explaining what it would mean to you to have the opportunity to take this workshop. Applications for this opportunity will be accepted through April 8, 2018.


Instructors Peter and Donna Thomas, authors and illustrators of "More Making Books by Hand," are book artists, papermakers, and letterpress printers who write, illustrate, and bind their own books. Since 1977 they have produced over 175 limited edition books and over 325 one-of-a-kind artists' books, which can be found in collections around the globe, including the Jaffe Collection. They have been self-employed in the book arts since 1977, making books, teaching workshops and giving lectures. They are active in the leadership of the Miniature Books Society and the Friends of Dard Hunter. In 2010 and 2011, as the wandering book artists, they traveled around the USA in their artistic tiny home on wheels. They reside in Santa Cruz, California.
