Artists' Statement
Many years ago
we ran across a quote that mentioned in passing the numbers of
printers who had been put to death or exiled because of their
activities making, selling or distributing books. That was an
inspiration
for us to collect the individual names (if possible) and numbers
of printers and publishers who have been martyred for their
profession.
It would be one thing if this were only ancient history but,
sadly, these accounts remind us that there are still many places
where danger for the printer, the bookseller and the publisher
is very real and present. One of those places is the fabled Al-Mutanabbi
Street, the literary center of Baghdad.
In making our contribution for Mutanabbi Street Starts Here we
are placing the current horrors of the Middle East in historical
context. We believe that it makes the current tragedy even more
poignant.
