Elephant House
or, The Home of Edward Gorey
Photographs
by Kevin
McDermott / Books by Edward Gorey
August 7 through
November 8, 2009

The enigmatic
artist Edward Gorey was a private man, usually preferring
the company of his cats to that of his two-legged
acquaintances. This exhibition of photographs by Kevin
McDermott of Gorey's Cape Cod home brings us into his
bizarre world. The exhibition also features books and
ephemera by Edward Gorey.
This library-wide exhibition runs through November 8,
2009 . This includes the main lobby of the Wimberly Library,
the Wimberly Administrative Offices (2nd floor west), and
the lobby of
the Jaffe Center for Book Arts (3rd floor
east), as well as inside
the Jaffe Book Arts Gallery. The
exhibition may be viewed anytime during regular library
hours, which may be found at
FAU
Wimberly Library Hours or by calling (561) 297-3770.
We recommend visitors park at the meters in the parking lot
outside the Wimberly Library or in those in the Parking
Garage just west of the library (turn right upon entering
the building.)

I met illustrator/artist Edward Gorey when I was a
student at New York University in the mid-1980's.
Over the years I had the opportunity to work with
him on various theatre projects, including producing
and acting in two Off-Broadway musicals of his work.
On April 15th of 2000, I received a call telling me
that Edward had died. The following weekend, with
permission from his estate, I photographed Edward's
home before anything was moved. I had always felt
his home said something about the man I had the
privilege to call a friend. Few had entered his
private retreat, and I wanted to capture it before
it disappeared.
