Jeanne Jaffe: Shadow Puppets

Saturday August 24, 2019
1 PM at the Book Arts Gallery, Jaffe Center for Book Arts
at Florida Atlantic University's Wimberly Library
(part of the Library Wayzgoose Festival)

Free • Donations encouraged • Open to all • No reservations

JCBA’s current exhibition, “Building Stories: Alternative Storytelling,” has its roots in two puppetry classes that Jeanne Jaffe taught in China in 2018. In this informative gallery talk, Jaffe presents experiences working with the students and faculty there at Xian Academy of Fine Arts and at Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, as well as some of the history behind this fascinating and ancient form of storytelling. You’ll also enjoy the excellent short films––all are stop motion animations––that her students in China created using the puppets and marionettes they made in her classes.

This is a free gallery talk in conjunction with JCBA’s Library Wayzgoose Festival, though donations to the non-profit Jaffe Center, which is devoted to the study of hand papermaking, letterpress printing and bookbinding, are encouraged. You’ll find a donation box at the gallery doors should you be inspired to help support our educational programs. And please come early and stay late for the Wayzgoose! There are wonderful events all day long from 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM as JCBA takes over the entire 3rd floor east wing of FAU’s Wimberly Library with live music, print shop demos with Val Lucas of Bowerbox Press, and our first Makers Marketplace of the season. Admission is free and so is parking.

Jeanne Jaffe is a multi-disciplinary artist who is Professor Emeritus in Multi-disciplinary Fine Arts at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, a visiting artist/professor at Xian Academy of Fine Arts in China each fall and the Coordinator of International Programs at the Jaffe Center for Book Arts. Ms. Jaffe is the recipient of fellowship grants from the Gottlieb Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Mid Atlantic/NEA, Mino Artist Residency in Japan, the Leeway Foundation and the Virginia A. Groot Foundation among many others. Works by Ms. Jaffe were reviewed in Art in America, Sculpture Magazine, and exhibited both nationally and internationally.
