JCBA's Fifth Annual Letterpress Appreciation Day Open house

Thursday September 18, 2014 from Noon to 6 PM (drop by any time!)

Jaffe Center for Book Arts Letterpress Studio 351H

September 18 is celebrated in print shops across the US and the UK as Letterpress Appreciation Day, based on the standard height of wood and metal type (0.918 inches). Come join in the fun at the Jaffe Center for Book Arts. At our fifth annual Letterpress Appreciation Day Open House, you can print a poster on our 1890 Wesel Iron Handpress from our collection of historic wood type and learn about this fascinating craft. The poster is yours to keep, and printing it will teach you the difference between clicking PRINT and actually PRINTING.

JCBA's Letterpress Studio is home to an assortment of historic printing presses, all of which are actively used by students and visiting artists to create hand-printed books and literary broadsides. The open house, which is open to all, is a great introduction to the print aspects of the center.

"The open house is sponsored by Convivio Bookworks, a book arts studio based in Downtown Lake Worth. Handmade limited edition books and broadsides will be for sale, with a portion of each sale benefitting the Jaffe Center for Book Arts. The Convivio Bookworks folks will be have coffee, tea, and Italian cookies for you, too! This is a free event, though donations to the non-profit Jaffe Center, which is devoted to the study of hand papermaking, letterpress printing and bookbinding, are encouraged. (In keeping with the spirit of Letterpress Appreciation Day, might we suggest gifts in multiples of $9.18?) Cash, checks, and major credit cards are accepted for both donations and purchases.

The Jaffe Center for Book Arts is located on the third floor east of Florida Atlantic University's Wimberly Library. From I-95 or the Florida Turnpike, exit Glades Road, east. The FAU campus is located just east of I-95. If you enter the campus at FAU's main entrance (the one furthest west on Glades Road... and the first one you get to approaching from I-95 or the turnpike), you will enter on West University Drive (formerly Broward Avenue). Continue straight on West University Drive to the traffic light at its intersection with Volusia Street. Turn right onto Volusia Street. You will see a parking garage on Volusia Street, and the Wimberly Library is the next building east of the parking garage. Visitor Parking is available at the metered spaces in the library parking lot; the meter system accepts payment with cash or credit card.
