St. John's Day is June 24, and Midsummer Night falls the evening before. These are old celebrations based on the timing of the summer solstice and the longest days of the year, a time traditionally thought of as more magical than ordinary time, and there will be plenty of magic in the air as we transform you into a book artist in this three and a half hour introductory immersion in the Jaffe Center for Book Arts.
Located at historic T6
We've been working toward this goal for years, and finally, here it is: The grand opening of the hand papermaking lab at the Jaffe Center for Book Arts. We'll be making paper in the traditional manner from rag and from plants at our new studio, as well as offering workshops in hand papermaking that are open to all. It's a very big day for us!
While the Jaffe Center for Book Arts is located at FAU's Wimberly Library, papermaking and libraries don't get along very well. Papermaking is very water intensive, and libraries, traditionally, are not typically a place where one hopes to find lots of water. As a result, we've placed JCBA's Paper Lab in a satellite location, close to the new FAU Football Stadium. The JCBA Paper Lab is located at T6, one of the few historic buildings that remain on campus from the days of the Boca Raton Army Air Field.
FAU is built on the site of BRAAF, a military base in operation in Boca Raton through World War II. BRAAF's biggest claim to fame was as a radar training center, which was new military technology in the 1940s. In fact, the BRAAF insignia was a diving pelican with radar waves emanating from its head.
us at our grand opening as we look to the future by celebrating our
building's past with a festive 1940s autumnal party:
• Apples and pumpkins and cornstalks!
• Dancing on the porch to 1940s hits!
• 1940s singalongs with accordionist Anne Dennis! Anne performed with the USO at bases across the world during the war... including our own BRAAF.
• And of course, papermaking and letterpress printing!
We'll be having a grand old time and it'll be even grander if you join us. This event is free and open to all. Donations to the JCBA Education Fund, which makes all this happen, are encouraged. We'll also have some great stuff for sale!
WHERE IS T6?
Historic T6 is located on FAU's Boca Raton campus, at the northeast corner, very close to Henderson School and the FAU Football Stadium and directly across the street from the east entrance of Palm Beach State College.
From Glades Road: Enter the FAU campus at the main entrance (the one closest to I-95) and you will find yourself on West University Drive. Continue straight. The road will curve eventually and become North University Drive and the Football Stadium will soon be in view. There will be a traffic light just past the stadium. Continue straight, and make a left turn at the stop sign, onto NW 8th Avenue. On your right, across from the entrance to Palm Beach State College, is T6, a long single-story building with a tall brick chimney. This is the place! T5 is the next building, and then comes a parking lot, which is where you should park.
From Spanish River Boulevard: Enter the FAU Campus at the traffic light at FAU Boulevard. Before the road makes a big curve off to the west, you will make a left turn onto NW 8th Avenue. Palm Beach State College will be on your right, and on your left, you will soon see two long single-story buildings with tall brick chimneys. These are Buildings T5 and T6. Park in the parking lot just north of T5. The Paper Lab is located a short walk away in T6.
