For I Am a Stranger

Artist's Statement

This is a project that touched my heart. When I heard that volunteers were being asked to print broadsides to raise money for humanitarian aid in Iraq, there was no question in my mind that here was a chance to do something that could make a real difference for real people.

My broadside was printed using a combination of old and new technologies. The body of the poem was handset using metal type; the titling and colophon are photopolymer plates, which allows letterspacing that would be impossible to achieve with traditional means. Together, these elements were printed using a Vandercook SP-15 proof press. The background image was printed using a Canon PIXMA Pro9000 large-format inkjet printer. The “blood” is artists’ gouache that was dripped from a brush.

Having seen many of the other broadsides submitted for this project, I am delighted to have my work appear among such creative and distinguished company.
