Artist's Statement

I decided to make a print in which the letter-press technique would be combined with an illustration in wood print. For the poem the first letters written downwards lead to the name of the sadly destroyed street in Baghdad: al-Mutanabbi. As part of it with a jigsaw I cut out an outline of a Baghdad-street plan, this worked as a nice abstract element. Because of a shortage of letters, I had to distribute them after the first printing and re-use them for the second part of the poem. That’s why the poem itself has been printed in two colors: this shortage of type (which called for the second run through the press) allowed me the opportunity to add a second color which ended up giving the broadside a more intense graphic feeling, a nice coincidence!
