Social Sciences Full Text (Use this in place of Social Science Abstracts) (1983-present) - Subject areas include addiction studies, anthropology, area studies, community health and medical care, corrections, criminal justice, criminology, economics, environmental studies, ethics, family studies, gender studies, geography, gerontology, international relations, law, minority studies, planning and public administration, policy sciences, political science, psychiatry, psychology, public welfare, social work, sociology, and urban studies. Web of Science (1945-present) - Includes the Arts and Humanities Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, and Science Citation Index Expanded. Allows users to search for cited references.
Not everything is available online or electronically. Sometimes the best resources are found in print format. The following materials are some of the best sources for intercultural communication and cultural diversity. Accuracy in Media - A nonprofit watchdog group whose goal is to present fair and objective news. Adbusters - A not-for-profit magazine based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada that focuses on the roles commercial forces play on our physical and cultural environments. Published by the Adbusters Media Foundation. BBC - Homepage for the British Broadcasting Corporation which has been in existence since 1922. Its goal is to entertain, educate, inform, innovate, and enrich its viewers and listeners. Current Online - Biweekly newspaper about public broadcasting. Founded in 1980, the paper is published 23 times a year. Many of the paper's articles are posted on this site. Cursor.org - Put out by Cursor, Inc., a tax-exempt charity that educates the public on the relationship between media and society. Part of its mission has been to "expose the absurdities and excesses of an increasingly corporatized, sanitized and celebrity-driven news media." Digital Media - From the University of Iowa's Department of Communication Studies. A handy list of links on Hypertext, Cybernetics, Cyborgs, and Virtual Realities. Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting - The national watch group that has critically examined media bias and censorship. As a whole, the organization advocates for greater diversity in the press and media. Publishes the bi-monthly magazine, Extra!. Independent Media Center - Established in 1999 to cover the grassroots activities of the World Trade Organization protests in Seattle. The organization has grown in the past few years to serve as a collective of independent media organizations. Institute for Public Accuracy (IPA) - Consortium of policy researchers whose goal is to allow open media access for those who are often presented with news and information backed by corporate think tanks. Site features news releases and articles. Media History Monographs - Online journal devoted to the historical aspects of scholarly journalism and mass communication. Affiliated with the American Journalism Historians Association. NPR - Main page of National Public Radio. Includes links to the latest news, audio archives, transcripts, and more. Pacifica Radio - Non-profit listener-sponsor radio network that comprises five stations throughout the U.S. Part of its mission is to promote cultural diversity and freedom of the press. Paper Tiger Television - Website for the open, non-profit, volunteer video collective, Paper Tiger Television. The organization offers media literacy workshops, distribution of their public access series, and advocacy on grassroots causes. PRI - Site for the nation's leading developer of non-commercial audio content. PRI is an independent, non-profit corporation. PBS Online - Website for the private, non-profit media enterprise. Provides program and schedule information. Rhetorical and Cultural Studies Critical Theory - From the University of Iowa's Communication Studies department. This page provides links to sites that deal with theorists and scholars from rhetorical and cultural studies, e.g. Adorno, Bourdieu, Foucault, Habermas, etc. Union for Democratic Communications - An organization of communication researchers, journalists, media producers, policy analysts, academics and activists who critically examine the communication and media establishments.
