ProQuest Digital Dissertations (1861-present) - Access citations and abstracts for all titles in the Dissertation Abstracts databases. Titles published since 1997 are available in 24 page PDF previews, some of which can be downloaded in their entirety.

Web of Science (1945-present) - Includes the Arts and Humanities Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, and Science Citation Index Expanded. Allows users to search for cited references.

  • International Documentary Association - Association that seeks to support the "efforts of documentary film and video makers, increase public appreciation, and provide a forum for documentary makers, their supporters and suppliers."
  • International Federation of Film Archives - Collaborative effort of international film archives to ensure the preservation of motion pictures. Founded in 1938. Includes back issues of their Journal of Film Preservation.
  • Society for Cinema Studies - Professional organization comprised of individuals who are concerned with the study of moving images. Some of its members include college and university educators, filmmakers, historians, critics, and scholars.
  • Writers Guild of America - Organization that represents writers from motion picture, broadcast, cable, and new technologies industries.

FILM REVIEWS
  • Internet Movie Database - Free database of more than 260,000 film and television productions. 1892 to the present.

ONLINE JOURNALS
  • Jump Cut - Nonprofit refereed journal that publishes articles on independent film and video, Third World film and video, new media theory, and media use and pedagogy.
  • Kinoeye - Journal that features articles on Eastern and Central European films. Published biweekly in English.
  • Scope - Scholarly online journal from the Institute of Film Studies at the University of Nottingham. Focuses on film history, theory, and criticism.
  • Sight and Sound - Online access to some of the features from the print version of Sight & Sound, the film magazine of the BFI.

ARCHIVES / MUSEUMS / LIBRARIES
  • American Memory Online Collection - Search through the motion picture collection of the Library of Congress' American Memory gateway. (After the page opens, select the "Motion Pictures" link.)
  • The Internet Archive - Public nonprofit organization that offers permanent access to digital historical collections. Includes WWII propaganda films produced by the U.S. government, and "social guidance" films aimed at teaching teenagers to become socially responsible adults.
  • Margaret Herrick Library - Library of the Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that features books, periodicals, screenplays, special collections, and more for the film scholar. Located in Beverly Hills, CA.
  • UCLA Film and Television Archive - The archive itself preserves and showcases classic and current film and television. Its collection is only second in size to the Library of Congress.
  • US National Film Registry - Established in 1988 by the Library of Congress to preserve "culturally, historically, or esthetically important" films. Site includes lists of films that are selected each year by the Board to add to the registry.
  • USC Moving Image Archive - Holdings include 50,000 motion picture negatives, magnetic sound elements, and release prints, among others. Part of the School of Cinema-Television at USC.

GAY AND LESBIAN CINEMA
  • Film Fatale - Producer of lesbian short and feature length films.
  • Out in Television and Film - National organization that promotes the visibility of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (glbt) professionals in film and television.
  • Outfest - Information on glbt film festivals.
  • Lesbian Looks - A link to the annual film and video series that is held in Tucson, Arizona.

INTERNATIONAL CINEMAS
  • Asian Film Connections - Provides in-depth information about films from China, India, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and other parts of Asia.
  • Frenchculture.org - Part of a website that's produced by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the U.S. Also includes a link to French television in the U.S.
  • Italian Studies Web: Cinema - Provides links to topics that are relevant to Italian Cinema Studies. From the University Illinois Library Gateway.

  • The New Venue - Offers innovative "new movies for a new medium." Features short independent films that you can download.

  • Center for Documentary Studies - Duke University-affiliated interdisciplinary education organization that specializes in documentary work in photography, filmmaking, oral history, folklore, and writing.
