ELECTRONIC DATABASES

CCH Internet Tax Research NetWork

This is an excellent source of information on federal and state tax topics and estate planning. Commentaries on specific code sections are given, along with links to primary sources, such as the full-text of tax cases. Access to federal and state tax forms is also available.

LexisNexis Academic

This legal database contains the full-text of federal and state court cases, including tax cases. Cases can be searched using keywords or legal citations. This resource also contains law review articles and the full-text of primary sources, such as tax regulations, IRS memoranda and actions, and private letter rulings. Select “Legal Research” as the appropriate section for accessing the information.

RIA Checkpoint

Provides commentaries on tax laws, rulings, and cases, including links to primary sources. Additionally, this database contains information on international tax issues, such as the tax treaties between the United States and other countries.

Westlaw Campus

Along with access to tax laws and cases, this legal database includes “natural language” searching, which enables users to ask a question. Other unique features include access to a legal encyclopedia, and information about European laws.

Raabe, William A. et al. West’s Federal Tax Research. Cincinnati: South-Western College Pub., 2000. This reference guide is an excellent starting point for learning how to conduct tax research.


PERIODICALS

Recent paper issues (current year only) are located on the first floor of the West Wing and are arranged alphabetically by the Library of Congress (LC) call number (e.g. HJ2240.A37 ). Previous issues with LC call numbers that begin with HJ can be found on the second floor of the East Wing, and those beginning with K are located on the third floor of the West Wing.
