ProQuest Digital Dissertations
Covers every doctoral dissertation completed in the U.S. at accredited institutions for the last 150 years. Includes some master's theses and foreign language dissertations.
The World of Learning 
The World of Learning is a directory of international scope that provides information on learned societies, research institutions, libraries, museums, and universities. Subject divisions include academies, learned societies, research institutes, libraries and archives, museums and art galleries, universities, schools of art and music, and colleges of technology. It provides contact information for more than 200,000 faculty, staff and officials at these institutions. It is updated throughout the year.



PRINT RESOURCES

Not everything is available online or electronically. Sometimes the best resources are found in print format. The following materials are some of the best sources for higher education: academic.  Some are located in the Reference area of the Boca Raton FAU library and, since they are non-circulating, they can only be viewed in the library.

 

Available through NetLibrary Academic Scientists at Work: Navigating the Biomedical Research Career (Kluwer Academic/Plenum Publishers, 2002), by Jeremy Boss and Susan Eckert. ISBN: 0-306-47493-X.

This handbook for aspiring biomedical scientists features advice on finding an academic job, obtaining research grants, setting up and managing a laboratory, and advancing one's academic career. There's a chapter on mentoring and another summarizing the results of a national survey of biomedical faculty members on how to have a successful career in scientific research. The book's appendix has sample CV's and cover letters.

A comprehensive guide that starts with planning a job search and continues through the tenure process. A large section on written materials includes sample correspondence, professional vitas, and statements of teaching philosophy. A two-year timetable helps plan the search. The new third edition has additional information for candidates in the sciences and applicants for adjunct and community-college positions. There's also a section on nonacademic career options.

Funding and Scholarship Opportunities
The National Academies Postdoctoral and Senior Research Associateship Programs - The National Academies administers Postdoctoral and Senior Research Awards through its Associateship Programs, part of the Policy and Global Affairs Division. The Research Associateship Programs are sponsored by federal laboratories and NASA Research Centers at over one hundred locations in the United States and overseas.  Research Associateship awards are given for the purpose of conducting research at a specific laboratory chosen by the applicant, are made to doctoral level scientists and engineers who can apply their special knowledge and research talents to research areas that are of interest to them and to the host laboratories and centers, are made to Postdoctoral Associates (within 5 years of the doctorate) and Senior Associates (normally 5 years or more beyond the doctorate)
Intramural NIAID Research Opportunities- National Institute of Health (Program is for minority students) - The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) seeks to identify, train, and mentor talented students from populations underrepresented in the biomedical sciences who are interested in exploring career opportunities in allergy, immunology, and infectious diseases. The Intramural NIAID Research Opportunities program (INRO) will introduce students to research and training opportunities in NIAID's Division of Intramural Research (DIR).
The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation - Each individual entering the James Madison Fellowship Program will expected to pursue and complete a master's degree in one of the following (listed in order of the Foundation's preference): Master of Arts (MA) in American history or in political science (also referred to as "government and politics" or as "government"); Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) concentrating on either American Constitutional history (in a history department) or American government, political institutions, and political theory (in a political science department); Master of Education (MEd) or the Master of Arts or Master of Science in Education with a concentration in American history or American government, political institutions, and political theory.
