Basic Searching - Journal and Magazine Titles

If you want to know whether or not the library carries a particular journal, magazine, or newspaper, you can search for this in the catalog.

Let's say you need the following:

  • a 1980 issue from The Review of Metaphysics, a metaphysics scholarly journal
  • a 1973 issue from Newsweek magazine
  • the latest issue of Newsweek

Searching for The Review of Metaphysics:

Click Journal/Magazine Title in the search type box.
Type the title of the journal in the search terms box. (Remember to leave off "a," "an," and "the.") (See Figure 16)

The Catalog record shows that there is one item in the collection with this title. (See Figure 17)

The figure above does not tell us whether or not the library has issues from 1980. Click the link that says, "Library Has" to see what holdings of The Review of Metaphysics the library has. (See Figure 17 above.)

Here, you can see that the library began its collection of The Review of Metaphysics with volume 9 of 1955-1956. (See Figure 18 below)

This page also tells us that the library currently subscribes to this journal, and that the current issue is from December 2002.

Looking closely, we can also see that our 1980 issue will be found in the library.
