1. Create your strategy

A. What is your topic? Is it a career?

B. Decide on the basic terms you will use in your search. (The keywords)

C. What other words (synonyms) describe your key words?

D. Decide what types of information you need for your paper. (Books, articles)

2. Finding Books: FAU Catalog

The Catalog lists the books, government documents, videos, and other materials owned by the FAU libraries. It will tell you what books and journals, etc. the library owns.

A. Keywords: May search for two keywords using the terms and / or / not to limit the search.

B. Author's name: Use last name then first name with no commas

C. Title: If the title begins with A, An or The, skip the first word and begin searching with the next word, for example, Occupational Outlook Handbook.

D. Subject: Must be specific to Library of Congress search terms. Good cross references may be obtained through this search.

Helpful Hints: Take note of Book location, Call Number and Availability.

3. Searching for Articles: Indexes/Databases

A. Databases are used to find scholarly journal articles from periodicals (journals). The articles may be taken from newspapers, magazines, and journals.

B. EzProxy/Off  Campus Connect is necessary to log on from off campus in order to use the electronic collection.

C. SFX searches across databases to find a full text article if the database you are searching does not have one. Be sure to click on SFX before doing an interlibrary loan.

Academic Search Premier, designed specifically for academic institutions, is the world's largest scholarly, multi-disciplinary full text database containing full text for nearly 4,700 publications, including more than 3,600 peer-reviewed publications. In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for nearly 8,200 journals in the collection. This scholarly collection offers information in nearly every area of academic study including: computer sciences, engineering, physics, chemistry, language and linguistics, arts & literature, medical sciences, ethnic studies, and many more. Academic Search Premier is an enormous collection of the most valuable peer-reviewed full text journals, offering critical information from many sources unique to this database.

Delivers biographical and bibliographical information on authors and their works. Covers authors of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, history, and journalism. [Under 'Limit the current search,' select the desired database.]

Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center | 2003-present |
Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center draws on the acclaimed social issues series published by Greenhaven Press, as well as core reference content from other Gale and Macmillan Reference USA sources to provide a complete one-stop source for information on social issues. Access viewpoint articles, topic overviews, statistics, primary documents, links to websites, and full-text magazine and newspaper articles.
