The selected resources listed below are useful for finding information about various careers.

FINDING BOOKS

FAU LIBRARIES CATALOG

  • Searching by Title:
    At the "Basic Search" screen, select "Title" and type in
    Occupational Outlook Handbook

  • Subject Searching:
    At the "Basic Search" screen, select "Subject Heading” and type in the following subject headings:

Occupations--Handbooks, manuals, etc.
Vocational guidance--Handbooks, manuals, etc.

  • Keyword Searching:
    Go to the "Advanced Search" screen and select "Anywhere" and type in your keywords (e.g. interior designer).

FINDING ARTICLES

ELECTRONIC DATABASES
Journal and magazine articles can be found in electronic databases, which are available from the FAU Libraries home page by selecting "Indexes/Databases" under "Quick Links."

Remember to select the link entitled "Off Campus Connect" for the "EZproxy" server when accessing the electronic databases remotely.   

USING OTHER RESOURCES

  • "Careers and Occupations"
    This is a library research guide that provides helpful information about resources in the print and electronic formats that can be used to research a career.  "Research Guides" can be accessed from the FAU Libraries home page by selecting "Research" and "Getting Starting."
     

  • Occupational Outlook Handbook
    This is a government document published by the Department of Labor and is available in the paper format on Reserve (L2.3/4:) or in the electronic format at http://www.bls.gov/oco/

EVALUATING INFORMATION

If you are not using one of the "Electronic Databases" listed above or other databases via the FAU Libraries Electronic Collection, you need to consider some of the following questions when evaluating information from the Internet:

  1. How authoritative is the source of information?

  2. How accurate is the information?

  3. How reliable is the information?

  4. How current is the information?

  5. How relevant is the information to my topic?
