Before You Start
**EZ-Proxy
is necessary to access databases and electronic journals from off-campus
locations. Before you begin any research, click
here, enter your OWL card number, and make sure that your access is
working. If it is not, call the circulation desk at the Boca Library at
561-297-6911 during normal business hours to have the card activated.
The Online Databases are where you will look for articles for most of
your off-campus research. Remember that not all of the databases are going
to provide full-text articles and that you will want to search for articles
from
peer-reviewed, or scholarly journal sources.
Online Databases
CINAHL
CINAHL
The database is the online version of Cumulative Index to Nursing &
Allied Health Literature. It provides access to nearly 1200 nursing,
allied health, biomedical, and consumer health journals. Also includes
books, dissertations, standards of professional practice, and
educational software. The interface is similar to Ebsco in nature. If
you need assistance use the Help
feature located in the upper right hand corner of the CINAHL home
page.

access to CINAHL basic and advanced search tutorials click

Other Useful
Online databases
Academic Search Premier
Designed specifically for academic institutions, is the world's
largest scholarly, multi-disciplinary full text database containing full
text for nearly 4,700 publications, including more than 3,600
peer-reviewed publications. This is a good general use database and
offers a chance to do a cited reference search. A cited reference search
is a search for your article in the citations and bibliographies of
other works.
Digital Dissertations
Authoritative source for information about U.S. doctoral dissertations
and master's theses. This database represents the work of authors from
over 1,000 graduate schools and universities.
EBM Reviews (OVID)
Subsets include Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, ACP Journal
Club, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Database of
Abstracts of Reviews of Effects. This is an excellent source to look for
meta-analysis articles, randomized control trials, and systematic
reviews.
Health and Wellness Resource Center
Provides bibliographic references, abstracts, and full-text information;
a medical dictionary; excerpts from reference books; contact information
for support groups; hotlines for research centers; and pamphlets issued
by leading health organizations.
MEDLINE
(PubMED)
The National Institute of Health-National Library of Medicine database
that contains citations and abstracts from over 4,800 journals. Covers
all areas of medicine including clinical medicine, experimental
medicine, dentistry, nursing, health services administration, nutrition,
and more. Some links to full text articles.
Natural Medicine Comprehensive Database
Provides evidence-based, clinical information on natural medicines,
herbal medicines, and dietary supplements used in the western world.
Prescriber's Letter
Contains practical alerts and advice, for prescibers, on developments in
drug therapy.
PsycARTICLES
Contains the full text of articles from APA journals and selected EPF
journals, most from 1988 to the present.
PsycINFO
PsycINFO provides access to international literature in psychology and
related disciplines such as psychiatry, education, business, medicine,
nursing, pharmacology, law, linguistics, and social work. Nearly all
records contain nonevaluative summaries, and all records from 1967 to
the present are indexed using the Thesaurus of Psychological Index
Terms.
Web of Science
Allows for traditional and cited reference searching. A cited reference
search is a search for your article in the citations and bibliographies
of other works.
Online Journals
There is a difference between online databases
and online journals. Online databases are where numerous online journals
will be aggregated (collected) and an interface available for you to search
them. Multiple databases may feature the same journal but have different
ways to search them. An online journal is simply a journal that is located
online. If you know the name of the specific journal that you want, you can
click on the
electronic journals
link. Then you can enter the name of the journal and you will get a list of
what databases have that journal available and whether it is full-text. You
may also search in the
library catalog. The library catalog has changed since last semester,
there is a
tutorial
to show you how to use the basic functions and how to generate searches.
Print Resources
Books and Journals are located in the library
in the stacks, cataloged by subject. There is a separate section for
materials such as reference, microfilm, microfiche, videos, audio, and
DVD’s. Journals will not necessarily all be in the same area on the shelves.
You can search the library
catalog for where the materials are located as well as whether they are
checked out or not.
Interlibrary Loan
If you have looked in the catalog and in the
databases and still cannot find the material that you are looking for, or if
you know the specific name of the book or article that you are trying to
find that you know is not at FAU, you can use interlibrary loan (ILL).
Interlibrary loan uses a program called
ILLIAD to process you requests and find them at other schools. You can
also use ILLIAD to track your requests once they have been entered.
Materials can then be picked up at Boca Raton or the branch closest to you.
Remember that FAU will not interlibrary loan required texts for your class
or materials that are already owned by FAU, so if an item is missing from
the shelves place a lost or stolen material form and submit it at the
circulation desk. REMEMBER Interlibrary loan takes time (7-10 days), so you
cannot wait until the last minute to request these materials.
Citation Information
Your instructor prefers that you use the
American Psychological Association citation format for your assignments.
This can be located on the shelves by the call number and there are copies
available at Boca Raton, Jupiter, and the Treasure Coast and some can be
checked out. There is also an online tutorial available.
