selected sources listed below are useful for finding
books and articles about music and
composers from antiquity to the 20th century.
FAU LIBRARIES CATALOG

For books on music history, go to the
"Basic Search" screen and choose
"Subjects, All" from the "Browse Organized
Lists" menu. Type in any of the following
Library of Congress subject headings (with two
dashes for subheadings):
Music--History and criticism--to 400
Music--History and criticism--Medieval, 400-1500
Music--History and criticism--16th century
Music--History and criticism--17th century
Music--History and criticism--18th century
Music--History and criticism--19th century
Music--History and
criticism--20th century

For books
on composers,
go to the “Basic Search”
screen and choose “Subjects, All”
from the “Browse Organized Lists”
menu. Type in the name of the composer (e.g.
Beethoven or Mozart).
ELECTRONIC DATABASES
Electronic Databases are available from the FAU
Libraries home page at
http://www.fau.edu/library
by selecting "Research Resources" or "Quick Links" and
then "Indexes/Databases". When accessing the
databases remotely, be sure to select the link for the "EZproxy"
server.

Expanded Academic ASAP
This general index gives references to articles on
the history of music and musicians in such
publications as "19th Century Music", the "Journal
of the American Musicological Society" and other
music periodicals.

Humanities Full Text
Provides articles on subject areas that include
music, dance, performing arts and many others. The
full text of articles is available in this database
beginning with January 1995.

JSTOR
This database gives access to full text articles
from many scholarly journals in the area of music.
It can be searched by using keywords or by
"browsing" subject lists of journals and their
contents.

Music Index 1978-present
Contains references to articles on music and
musicians in 725 international music periodicals.

New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians
This is an excellent starting point for finding
information about the life and works of a composer.

ProQuest Dissertations and Theses
Contains references to doctoral
dissertations completed in the U.S. at accredited
institutions. Some full text of dissertations
is available.

RILM Abstracts of Music Literature 1967-present
Provides references, with summaries, to articles,
books, dissertations and other publications of
scholarly interest on various music topics.
EVALUATING INFORMATION
If you are not using one of the "Electronic Databases"
listed above or other databases via the
FAU Libraries Electronic Collection, you need to
consider some of the following questions when evaluating
information from the Internet:
