Library Databases

Note about Proquest: Proquest is one of many databases the FAU Libraries subscribes to, accessible via Blackboard for this course without any further login.

The following additional databases also index articles and article citations in subject areas relevant to counseling. To access any of them from off-campus, one must first log into the library's system via the EZ-Proxy web page.

Finding Journal Articles

What if I find an article citation without full-text? You can use SFX, but here's a step-by-step guide to the larger process of looking for journal articles:

Step 1:  Database (i.e., Proquest, PsycARTICLES, PsycINFO, etc.)

  • Search by topic to find out what articles exist. If you find the full article, great. If not, proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: Electronic Journals

  • Only got a citation from that database? Use either SFX or individual browser windows to search in Electronic Journals by the JOURNAL TITLE (i.e., Journal of Counseling and Development). If the results indicate that we subscribe to the year your article was published, you can browse by year, volume, and then issue number to pull up the article. For instance, we do subscribe to the journal online from 1984 to the present in Academic Search Premier (also in Proquest, for a slightly smaller range of years).

  • What if you need an article, and we don't subscribe electronically to the needed journal for the year you need? Proceed to Step 3, because we might have it in print.

Step 3: Catalog

  • If you searched in a database, and checked our online holdings in Electronic Journals, and were not able to get the article online, try the Catalog. It might be on the shelf. Search by "Journal/Magazine Title Search" (i.e., Journal of Counseling and Development). Click on the "library has" link to make sure we have the year/volume you need. If we do, write down that Call Number (i.e., HF5381.A1 O45) next to the citation. You can pull it off the shelf upstairs and make a copy.

  • Big Tip: Need to make copies in the library? Avoid copier fees by using the library's KIC Scanning Machine. You may scan journal articles, class notes, images, etc and print, burn, or save to a jump drive, all for FREE. For burning, the CD is provided by the machine.

  • What if the library doesn't own the article electronically OR in print? Assuming you have at least a week to obtain the article, proceed to Step 3.

Step 4: Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

  • If the library does not own an item you want for your research, you may submit a request through our ILLiad system. You will be notified by email when the item arrives.

Organize Your Citations With RefWorks

Now that I have all these articles and article citations, how do I keep track of them? The library has a resource called RefWorks. With RefWorks, users can create their own personal database by importing references from online databases.  They can use these references in writing their papers and automatically format the paper and the bibliography in seconds.

Library Workshops

The FAU Libraries (Boca Raton Campus) offer Beyond Google, Graduate Research, and Refworks workshops each semester
