Activities: In this session we will learn how to access information concerning cross cultural human relations by using the library’s catalog to locate books, journals, and databases to search for relevant reports and articles.

Goals: At the conclusion of this session you will be able to:

  1. Access the library's catalog from home or campus;
  2. Locate helpful helpful databases for doing management/business research;
  3. Navigate elected databases and retrieve chosen records;

Accessing Information:

The address of the Library’s web site is (http://www.fau.edu/library). In order to access databases from home you must use EZ Proxy. This can be done by going to Quick Links on the homepage and then clicking <Off Campus Connect>. 

To find the class web page, go to Quick Links and click <Instructional Services> and then click <Class Web Pages – Spring 2007>.

Central Search Is...

Central Search is a powerful search engine that allows users to search the FAU Libraries online catalog and research databases simultaneously. You may search a number of databases grouped together by subject, or select databases by title

Internet search engines do your research for you. Learn how internet search engines like Google work.

FAU LIBRARIES CATALOG

Ø      Searches will find books and journals. More effective searches can be done using subject terms.  

Ø      Print journals owned by the Library can be found by clicking on the JOURNALS/SERIALS  link in the Catalog. Search for journal titles in the Browse Organized Lists search box by Titles begins with. To see if a title is included within an electronic database, search Electronic Journals by title from the Electronic Collection page.

Ø      Business databases can be found by going to Quick Links and selecting Index/Databases followed by Databases by Subject.

      When using the ALEPH library catalog to look for books and other materials, you may want to do a "Subject, All" search located under the Browse Organized Lists search box and use the following Library of Congress subject headings. This is not a complete list. (Note: Use two dashes (located next to the zero/0 on the keyboard) to separate subdivisions from headings.)   (i.e. Labor--Peru)

netLibrary  Well over 10,000 E-Books covering a full range of subjects. [First time users, click on "Create Account" and choose your User Name and Password.   In order to create your account, you need to be on campus or authenticate via EZproxy off campus prior to accessing the netLibrary link.]

Try searching using keyword the country name and the keyword culture or business culture.

Try  an advance search to see if there is a World Bibliographical Series for a country using keyword searching.  keyword = country name and keyword = World Bibliographical Series.

 

SELECTED DATABASES

You must use EZ Proxy to access databases from off campus.

Ø     ABI/INFORM Complete (Global, Archive, Dateline, Trade & Industry
This resource enables one to search multiple ABI databases: ABI/INFORM Global, ABI/INFORM Archive Complete, ABI/INFORM Dateline, and ABI/INFORM Trade & Industry. 

      Try Going Global located in ABI/Inform:

    -Go to either ABI Complete or ABI Global and <Advanced Search>.
    -Key a country name; Brazil, Japan, China, etc. on the first line, leave the field box alone (Citation, whatever default is).
    -Key "Going Global" in the second line (caps are not important but quote marks are).
    -At the results page click the tab that says <Reports>; not <Newspapers>, <Scholarly> etc.
    -You will now see all types of reports for the various countries of interest. They are things like Business Climate, Embassies, Interviewing, etc.

Ø     Academic Search Premier
Academic Search Premier, designed specifically for academic institutions, is the world's largest scholarly, multi-disciplinary full text database containing full text for nearly 4,700 publications, including more than 3,600 peer-reviewed publications.

Ø    Access World News Access World News from NewsBank provides full-text information and perspectives from over 600 U.S. and over 500 international   sources, each with its own distinctive focus offering diverse viewpoints on local, regional and world issues.

Ø      ArticleFirst 
Contains bibliographic citations with some full text from more than 13,000 journals in science, technology, medicine, social science, business, the humanities, and popular culture.

Ø      Business and Management Practices 
Contains online articles about the practical aspects of business management. Provides real-world know-how that focuses on how organizations make and implement decisions, develop and launch new strategies, and plan for change. Includes case studies and how-to articles. Searches for business concepts, industries, and specific departments within an organization. Management issues and business practices including: benchmark planning, best practices, business plans, corporate culture, expansion, long range planning, quality control, reengineering, resources case studies and guidelines, technology.

Ø      Business Source Premier
The industry’s most used business research database with full text coverage in all disciplines of business, including marketing, management, MIS, POM, accounting, finance and economics.

Ø      Country Commerce
Country Commerce is a practical reference guide to the specific operating conditions, commercial laws and business regulations in more than 50 countries. It offers unbiased guidance on critical issues such as obtaining proper permits and registrations, protecting your intellectual property in the Internet age and complying with local tax laws-including e-commerce rules.

Ø      InfoTrac OneFile
A one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics.

Ø      MarketLine Business Information Centre (MBIC)
Provides profiles on 10,000 companies, 2,000 industries and 50 countries.

Ø      PAIS International  
Contains references to more than 553,300 journal articles, books, government documents, statistical directories, grey literature, research reports, conference reports, publications of international agencies, microfiche, Internet material, and more. Newspapers and newsletters are not indexed. PAIS International includes publications from over 120 countries throughout the world. In addition to English, some of the indexed materials are published in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Ø      STAT-USA  The STAT-USA link above is only accessible within the FAU Libraries [Boca, Davie, Jupiter, Tower only].  To access STAT-USA  from anywhere (on or off-campus), log into your MyFAU  account.  After logging into MyFAU, click on the Library tab.  The STAT-USA link appears at the bottom of the left column.

Provides access to authoritative U.S. business, economic and trade information from the Federal government.

Global Unions from the AFL-CIO

Global Unions
Global Unions is a website which is jointly owned and managed by a number of international trade union organisations. The website gives its members the ability to draw the attention of their partners, their members, and the press to the news they produce and the campaigns they run.

International Confederation of Free Trade Unions
Official website of the ICFTU, a confederation of national trade union centers, each of which groups together the trade unions of that particular country. The ICFTU has 195 affiliates in 137 countries on all five continents, with a membership of some 124 million. Site has policies and procedures of the ICFTU, links to member unions, and a press bulletin board.

International Labor Organization
The International Labour Organization ("ILO") is an international organization which has a long history of improving working conditions and promoting social justice and human rights. Indeed, in 1969, on its 50th anniversary, the ILO was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The ILO's website, located at http://www.ilo.org/, provides both general information about the organization and original documentation for scholars.web site includes speeches, reports, access to searchable thesauri and other databases.

  • ILOLEX - a browsable, searchable database of international labor conventions, recommendations, ratifications and other information. Full text of most segments online.
  • NATLEX - a database of international labour law.
  • Labor Statistics - "data from the International Labour Organization Bureau of Statistics. The data available here are an extract of LABORSTA, the Bureau's principal database. It consists mainly of annual time-series which serve to publish the ILO Yearbook of Labour Statistics. The application presents data covering 7 subjects in 23 tables." Available for onscreen viewing or download

LabourStart
Very up-to-date information on current labor news from around the world. Labour Links, Net Guide, Web site of the Week, Labour related Radio and TV.

The Library of Congress - Global Gateway - Portals to the World
Portals to the World contain selective links providing authoritative, in-depth information about the nations and other areas of the world. They are arranged by country or area with the links for each sorted into a wide range of broad categories. The links were selected by Area Specialists and other Library staff using Library of Congress selection criteria. When completed, the project will include all the nations of the world.

 Transparency International
Transparency International, the only international non-governmental organisation devoted to combating corruption, brings civil society, business, and governments together in a powerful global coalition.
