The selected sources listed below are useful for conducting graduate business research, which would include finding articles for an extensive literature review and finding information on companies for case studies.

 

ELECTRONIC DATABASES

 

Electronic databases are available from the FAU Libraries home page at (http://www.fau.edu/library) by selecting “Research Resources” and then “Indexes/Databases."  When accessing the databases remotely, select the link for the “EZproxyserver. 

 

ABI/INFORM Archive Complete 1918-1986

This is an important resource for historical research, since it provides references to articles in leading business journals back to the early 1900s.

 

ABI/INFORM Global

Gives references to journal articles on various business topics from more than 1,000 periodicals, including some international publications.   Searches can be limited to “full text” articles and “scholarly journals.”

 

Business & Company Resource Center

This is an excellent starting point for conducting a SWOT analysis of a company.  This database includes detailed information about companies, and the industries in which they operate.

 

Business Full Text

Provides references to many full text articles on various business topics.  Searches can be limited to “scholarly journals.”

 

Emerald Intelligence +Full Text

This database contains articles about corporate strategy, change management and international marketing and other topics related to management from primarily “scholarly journals.”

 

General Business File ASAP

Gives references to articles on various business topics and on companies and industries.  It includes many full text articles, which can be limited to “refereed” or scholarly publications.

 

LEXIS-NEXIS Academic

Includes current articles from newspapers, magazines and journals in the “Business News” section of this database.  Most effective way of searching is by typing in company name or keywords in the “Headline.”

 

 Mergent Online

This database is especially useful for locating detailed financial information on public companies, including SEC filings.

 

PsycINFO 1806-present

This is an excellent resource for scholarly articles dealing with organizational behavior and human resource management issues.

 

Standard & Poor’s (S & P) Netadvantage

Provides reports on companies and the industries in which they operate.  Industry information includes trends, company rankings, and industry statistics.

 

Wall Street Journal 1984-present

Provides full text access to articles, which can be searched by company name or keywords.

 

 

EVALUATING INFORMATION

 

            If you are not using one of the “Electronic Databases” listed above or other databases via the FAU Libraries Electronic Collection, you need to consider some of the following questions when evaluating information from the Internet:

 

1.      How authoritative is the source of the information?

2.      How accurate is the information?

3.      How reliable is the information?

4.      How current is the information?

5.      How relevant is the information to my topic?

 

 

CITING REFERENCES

 

APA Style Electronic Formats (by Dr. Mary Ellen Guffey)

This “quick” guide to citing sources found on the Internet provides the important components of a citation, with examples.

 

A Guide to Writing Research Paper (based on APA)

Gives detailed information about the form and structure of a research paper and how to properly cite sources.
