Activities:
In this session we will learn how to access information concerning health
policy issues by using the library’s catalog to locate books and government
documents, library web pages to find online government information, and
databases to search for relevant reports and articles.
Goals: At the
conclusion of this session you will be able to:
- Access the library's catalog from home or campus;
- Locate helpful government documents in various
formats;
- Link to federal and
state web sites with useful information;
- Navigate selected databases and retrieve
chosen records;
Accessing
Information:
The address of the Library’s web site is (http://www.fau.edu/library).
In order to access databases from home you must use EZ Proxy. This can be
done by going to Quick Links on the homepage and then clicking <Off
Campus Connect>.
To find the class web page, go to Quick Links
and click <Instructional Services> and then click <Class Web Pages
– Spring 2007>.

Ø
Searches will find books and government documents. More
effective searches can be done using subject terms.
Ø
Some catalog entries have “purl” addresses so they can
be accessed directly as an electronic resource (Adobe Acrobat Reader
required).
Ø
Items such as recent Congressional Hearings (Y4) may be
found on microfiche while others may be in print, including HE docs
from the Department of Health & Human Services.

GOVERNMENT INFORMATION
Ø
Select Research from library homepage followed by
Find and then Government Resources in order to find links to
electronic sites.
Ø
Listed under Laws and Regulations in the Subject
Guide, go to Thomas: Legislative Information on the Internet
to locate members of Congress, find Committee web sites, track the progress
of a bill, read entries in the
Congressional Record (1989-present), and view Committee reports.
Ø
Find links to similar sites for the state of Florida under
Florida Laws and Regulations.
Ø
Go to Federal Government Resources page and select
Department of Health & Human Services to view sections such as Policy
Information Center.
Ø
State and Local Government page links include
MyFlorida.com where you can go to Executive agencies such as Agency for
HealthCare Administration and Department of Health.
Ø

Guides page accessible from the Library’s homepage by selecting
Research and then Getting Started.

You must use

ABI Inform and
Info Trac OneFile are good sources for journal and newspaper
articles on timely subjects
Ø
CQ Weekly provides
coverage and commentary of the U.S. Congress including status of bills,
votes and amendments, floor and committee activity, and backroom maneuvering
Ø
CQ Public Affairs Collection features in-depth reporting on
vital issues, statistical and historical analyses, historic documents and
primary source materials, as well as a directory of key government,
nonprofit, and private organizations in each of the major policy areas
Ø
CQ Researcher provides reports on a variety of topics, some
under the subject term “Medical Care”, which include differing opinions,
background information, outlooks, chronologies, and extensive bibliographies
