 Locating books in the Library:

1. Endeca (the Library's catalog): select Library Catalog. The following types of searches are available:

A. Keywords: In Basic Search this looks for a word anywhere in the record. It is a very expansive search but you may need to be more precise.
B. Author's Name: Enter last name first, you do not need to capitalize
C. Title: If a title starts with "The," "A," or "An," omit it and skip to the next word.
D. Subject Heading: This search looks for items classified by a subject heading and organizes the results into sub-topics. Subjects must be entered in a specific manner according to the Library of Congress subject headings. You may get a cross-reference to the preferred subject heading. Some subject heading examples that might be useful:

Health facilities

Insurance, health

Health maintenance organizations

Managed care plans

Health planning

Medical care

Health services administration          Medical policy
Home care  services

Medicare fraud

Hospitals

Nursing homes

    Locating Census Information

The best way to search for Census information is to go to the American FactFinder web site of the U.S. Census Bureau. Choose the Data Sets option to view the contents of Summary Files. Select List all tables to find the category of information desired. You may then choose the geographic parameters for your search.

    Searching for articles in databases

The ALEPH catalog will tell you if the library owns a journal title, but does not provide information on individual articles. To search for articles, go to the FAU Libraries homepage and click on Indexes/Databases or Articles  There are both alphabetical and subject listings of databases. When using these databases from off-campus you must log in through the EZ-Proxy link by entering the 14 digit number from your Owl Card. The SFX link that appears in the results of most database searches allows you to connect to external sources such as other databases holding the full text of the article, the Library’s catalog, or ILLiad for requesting the article through Interlibrary Loan.
