Activities: In this session we will cover how to access the Library's catalog and databases and where to locate useful resources for completing assignments. Some useful databases will be demonstrated and information on citing sources will be presented.

Goals: At the conclusion of this session you will be able to:

  1. Access the library's catalog from home or campus;
  2. Choose helpful databases for doing management/business research;
  3. Know how to navigate selected databases and retrieve chosen records;

Accessing Information:

The address of the Library’s web site is (http://www.fau.edu/library). To access the databases/electronic journals using EZ Proxy, go to Quick Links on the homepage and click <EZ Proxy>.

To find the class web page, go to Quick Links and click <Instructional Services> and then click <Class Web Pages – Fall 2004>

Print journals owned by the Library can be found by doing a Journal/Magazine Title search in the catalog. To see if a title is included within an electronic database, search Electronic Journals by title from the Electronic Collection page.

 Health Sciences and Business databases can be found by going to Research Resources and selecting Index/Databases followed by Databases by Subject. There is also available a What's Your Major webpage and a Research Guide on Health Administration.

The selected sources listed below are useful for finding information about companies, industries and issues dealing with health care financial management

SELECTED DATABASES

  Electronic databases are available from the FAU Libraries home page at (http://www.fau.edu/library) by selecting “Research Resources” and then "Indexes/Databases."  To access the databases/electronic journals remotely using EZ Proxy, go to Quick Links on the homepage and click <EZ Proxy>.

ABI/INFORM Complete  | Some Full Text | Vendor: ProQuest Direct
Contents/Info: Gives references to journal articles on companies, industries and health care financial management issues from more than 1,000 periodicals. It contains some full text articles.  Searches can be limited to “full text” articles and “scholarly journals.

Business and Company Resource Center | 1980-present | Some Full Text | Vendor: Gale Group  
Contents/Info:
This is an excellent starting point for conducting a SWOT analysis of a company.  This database includes detailed information about companies, such as the history and financial data. 

Health Reference Center - Academic  | 1980-present | Full Text | Vendor: Gale Group
Contents/Info: Gives references to articles on various health care topics and issues.

MarketLine Business Information Centre (MBIC) | Full Text | Vendor: MarketLine
Contents/Info:
Provides analyses on international and domestic industries and companies.

Mergent Online | Full Text | Vendor: Mergent
Contents/Info: This database is especially useful for locating detailed financial information on public companies.  There is also a section of the database that includes the SEC filings.

Standard and Poor's (S&P)  NetAdvantage  | Full Text | Vendor: McGraw-Hill
  Contents/Info: Provides reports on companies and the industries in which they operate.  Information includes industry trends, company rankings within an industry, and industry statistics.

EVALUATING INFORMATION

 If you are not using one of the “Electronic Databases” listed above or other databases via the FAU Libraries Electronic Collection, you need to consider some of the following questions when evaluating information from the Internet

1.      How authoritative is the source of the information?

2.      How accurate is the information?

3.      How reliable is the information?

4.      How current is the information?

5.      How relevant is the information to my topic?

This is the official WEB site of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.  The latest and historical filings can be located by selecting the link “Search for Company Filings.”
