SIC and NAICS
Codes
SIC Codes (Standard
Industrial Classification) were developed in the 1930's by the
U.S. Bureau of the Budget, the Standard Industrial Classification System was a
numerical system to classify establishments by types of activity for purposes
of collecting data to promote uniformity with government agencies and the
private sector. Often criticize for not keeping up with the changing industry
and economic environment.
NAICS Codes (North
American Industry Classification System) began in 1997 in
response to the criticism of SIC codes. Slowly replacing SIC codes this
six digit code is a major revision that not only provides for newer
industries, but also reorganizes the categories on a
production/process-oriented basis. This new, uniform, industry-wide
classification system has been designed as the index for statistical reporting
of all economic activities of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
Print volumes are available at the Reference Desk.
