HOW TO FIND LIBRARY RESOURCES AND ELECTRONIC RESOURCES

 BOOKS  

  • For example: global warming--flooding

    Click on the "Catalog". This source lists the books, government documents, videos, and other materials owned by the FAU libraries. It will tell you what books and journals, etc. the library owns. To find the actual journal articles you may choose to search by subject or keyword in the databases listed below.

    A. Keywords: May search for two keywords using the terms and/or/not to limit search.

    B. Author's Name: Use last name first with no commas.

    C. Title: If the title begins with A, An or The, skip the first word and begin  searching with the next word.

    D. Subject: Must be specific to Library of Congress search terms. Use dashes in narrowing your search.


    WAYS TO FIND ARTICLES

    A. Use Off Campus Connect (EZproxy) link for off-campus access. The link is on the Libraries' Home Page under Connect from Off Campus

    B. Interlibrary Loan a service through which one library lends an item from its collection, or provides a photocopy of an item, to another library.

    C. SFX is extremely helpful in searching for articles that cross databases.

    D. Central Search - Now '360 Search a tool that allows users to search multiple databases from one interface.

    ELECTRONIC DATABASES

    Electronic Databases are available from the FAU Libraries home page at http://www.fau.edu/library by selecting "Indexes/Databases" under the heading "Quick Links." When accessing the databases remotely, be sure to select the "Off Campus Connect" link for the "EZproxy" server.

    Databases help you locate journal and magazine articles that are relevant to your specific research topic. You may search the databases by title or subject.

  • Academic Search Premier | 1975-present | Full Text 
    Contents/Info:Academic Search Premier, designed specifically for academic institutions, is the world's largest scholarly, multi-disciplinary full text database containing full text for nearly 4,700 publications, including more than 3,600 peer-reviewed publications. In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for nearly 8,200 journals in the collection.

  • BasicBIOSIS | 1998-present |
    Contents/Info: Covers the basic core of life science journals found in college and university libraries and written for undergraduate non-biology majors.  Includes popular and scholarly science journals.

  • Cambridge Scientific Abstracts  | Some Full Text |
    Contents/Info: Content coverage includes the life sciences, environmental, aquatic sciences, social sciences, computer technology and engineering.

  • Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management | 1981-present | Some Full Text |
    Contents/Info: Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management provides abstracts from over 6000 scientific journals and thousands of other sources, including conference proceedings, reports, books, and government publications in the environmental sciences.

  • ProQuest Digital Dissertations see ProQuest Dissertations and Theses | 1861-present
    Contents/Info: Covers every doctoral dissertation completed in the U.S. at accredited institutions for the last 150 years. Includes some master's theses and foreign language dissertations.

  • Academic OneFile | 1980-present | Full Text  |
    Contents/Info: Academic OneFile is the premier source for peer-reviewed, full-text articles from the world's leading journals and reference sources with extensive coverage of the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature and other subjects.  Includes full-text coverage of the New York Times back to 1995.

  • OmniFile Full Text Mega Edition  | Some Full Text |
    Contents/Info:
     Wilson OmniFile Full Text, Mega Edition is a multi-disciplinary database providing the complete content - indexing, abstracts, and full text - from six of Wilson's full-text databases: Education Full Text, General Science Full Text, Humanities Full Text, Readers' Guide Full Text, Social Sciences Full Text, and Wilson Business Full Text. Full-text articles from five additional periodical databases are also included when available: Applied Science & Technology Full Text, Art Full Text, Biological & Agricultural Index, Index to Legal Periodicals & Books, and Library Literature & Information Science Full Text. Full-text coverage begins in 1994. Each database has its own start dates for indexing, abstracting, and full text; start dates for full-text rights to individual journals vary within a database.

  • WorldCat Dissertations and Theses 
    Contents/Info:
    Provides access to to over 5 million records of dissertations and theses available in OCLC member libraries catalogs in the WorldCat database. Many theses are available electronically, at no charge, directly from the publishing institution.

    Contents/Info:Indexes the latest findings in every area of science, engineering, and technology covering trade and industrial publications, journals issued by professional and technical societies, and specialized subject periodicals. Abstracting coverage begins with periodicals published in March 1993.  Full Text coverage begins in 1997.

  • Elsevier Science Direct  | Full Text |
    Contents/Info: 1,100+ scholarly journals in engineering, science, and social science disciplines.

  • Ulrichsweb.com  
    Contents/Info: Provides information on prices, frequency of publication, addresses, publishers' phone and fax numbers, e-mail and Web site addresses for over 270,000 journals, magazines, annuals, series, newspapers, and other periodicals published worldwide.  Identifies special features, such as: the presence of reviews or indexes; whether a journal is refereed; and which indexing/abstracting services cover the periodical.     Contents/Info: Three unique citation databases which allow searching cited references as well as traditional searches independently or in combination: the Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts and Humanities Citation Index.

    Contents/Info: More than 300 online publications for researchers and professionals.
