I. Creating a Search Strategy
Save time and find the information you want: Create a search
strategy!
A. Write a phrase describing the topic of
your paper.
B. Underline the key words in your phrase.
C. Generate other words (or synonyms) that describe your key
words.
D. List the types of information you need to find
for your paper.
Print Resources
Books and Journals are located in the library in
the stacks, cataloged by subject. There is a separate section
for materials such as reference, microfilm, microfiche, videos,
audio, and DVD’s. Journals will not necessarily all be in the
same area on the shelves. You can search the
library catalog for what campus they are on,
where the materials are located on the shelves, as well as
whether they are checked out or not.
II. Finding Books and other print resources:

Sample Search:

Click on the
"Library Catalog". This source lists the books,
government documents, videos, and other materials owned by the
FAU libraries. It will tell you what materials. the library
owns. To find the actual journal articles you may choose to
search by subject or keyword in the databases listed in the
electronic databases section below.
- Basic Search: find books by Keyword,
Title, or Author.
- Advanced Search: combine more than one
word in your search.
- Take note of Book Location, Call Number and
Availability.
- Write down the name of a book you may be able to use,
along with its location and call number.
III. Interlibrary Loan- Accessing resources not
available at FAU or at your particular FAU campus.

Searching for Articles: Indexes/Databases
Databases are collections of articles from newspapers,
magazines, and journals.
Please select
OffCampus Connect to use databases from home,
log in using your OWL Card Number and the last four digits
of you social security number.

OmniFile Full Text Mega Edition :is a
multi-disciplinary database providing the complete content -
indexing, abstracts, and full text - from six of Wilson's
full-text databases: Education Full Text, General Science
Full Text, Humanities Full Text, Readers' Guide Full Text,
Social Sciences Full Text, and Wilson Business Full Text.

SIRS Knowledge Source: A reference source which
includes access to SIRS Researcher, SIRS Government
Reporter, SIRS Renaissance, SIRS NetSelect and SIRS
Interactive Citizenship.

Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center: Opposing
Viewpoints Resource Center draws on the acclaimed social
issues series published by Greenhaven Press, as well as core
reference content from other Gale and Macmillan Reference
USA sources to provide a complete one-stop source for
information on social issues. Access viewpoint articles,
topic overviews, statistics, primary documents, links to
websites, and full-text magazine and newspaper articles.

CQ Researcher Plus Archive: The CQ Researcher
explores a single "hot" issue in the news in depth each
week. Topics range from social and teen issues to
environment, health, education and science and technology.
There are 44 reports produced each year including four
expanded reports.

Academic Search Premier: This scholarly
collection offers information in nearly every area of
academic study including: computer sciences, engineering,
physics, chemistry, language and linguistics, arts &
literature, medical sciences, ethnic studies, and many more.
Academic Search Premier is an enormous collection of the
most valuable peer-reviewed full text journals, offering
critical information from many sources unique to this
database
Notes to remember:
- Refine your search results: combine
more than one search word, and also use limiters such as
“Full Text Only” or “Scholarly/Peer Reviewed”.
- SFX: If the full-text of a library
article is not available, select “SFX”. It will open windows
and provide links to other databases that may have the
article.
