I. Creating a Search Strategy

Save time and find the information you want: Create a search strategy!

A. Write a phrase describing the topic of your paper.

B. Underline the key words in your phrase.

C. Generate other words (or synonyms) that describe your key words.

D. List the types of information you need to find for your paper.

Print Resources

Books and Journals are located in the library in the stacks, cataloged by subject. There is a separate section for materials such as reference, microfilm, microfiche, videos, audio, and DVD’s. Journals will not necessarily all be in the same area on the shelves. You can search the library catalog for  what campus they are on, where the materials are located on the shelves, as well as whether they are checked out or not.

II. Finding Books and other print resources: FAU Library Catalog

Sample Search: global economics or global economy

Click on the "Library Catalog". This source lists the books, government documents, videos, and other materials owned by the FAU libraries. It will tell you what materials. the library owns. To find the actual journal articles you may choose to search by subject or keyword in the databases listed in the electronic databases section below.

  • Basic Search: find books by Keyword, Title, or Author.
  • Advanced Search: combine more than one word in your search.
  • Take note of Book Location, Call Number and Availability.
  • Write down the name of a book you may be able to use, along with its location and call number.

III. Interlibrary Loan- Accessing resources not available at FAU or at your particular FAU campus.

    Additional Databases:

  • CQ Researcher Plus Archive: The CQ Researcher explores a single "hot" issue in the news in depth each week. Topics range from social and teen issues to environment, health, education and science and technology. There are 44 reports produced each year including four expanded reports.

Academic Search Premier is an enormous collection of the most valuable peer-reviewed full text journals, offering critical information from many sources unique to this database

    Notes to remember:
  • Refine your search results: combine more than one search word, and also use limiters such as “Full Text Only” or “Scholarly/Peer Reviewed”.
  • SFX: If the full-text of a library article is not available, select “SFX”. It will open windows and provide links to other databases that may have the article.
