GOVERNMENT WEB SITES
Business
Conditions Digest
This WEB
site provides access to the monthly reports in the PDF format from 1968 to
1989 regarding "business cycle developments" in various economic sectors
such as construction contracts, new building permits and employment.
These reports are published by the Department of Commerce.
Consumer Price Indexes
Provides
detailed information on CPI statistics, published by the Department of
Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics. CPI reports are available in plain
text or the PDF formats, from 1994 to the present.
Economic
Indicators This
monthly compilation of U.S. economic statistics is published by the Joint
Economic Committee of the Council of Economic Advisors and is available on
the WEB, with reports dating back to 1948.
Economic Report of the
President
This annual report provides textual and statistical
information about the economic progress of the United States and is
written by the Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors.
EDGAR Database of Corporate Information (SEC)
This is the official WEB site of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
The latest and historical filings can be located by selecting the link “Search
for Company Filings.”
STAT-USA
This WEB site is a service of the Department
of Commerce and is a good resource for finding business, trade and economic
statistical information. It is comprised of two parts including:
"State of the Nation" and "GLOBUS & NTDB."
Survey of Current Business
This publication is published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis and is
available electronically through their WEB site. It contains detailed
information about the U.S. economy. The issues from 1994 to the
present are available in a PDF format.
ELECTRONIC DATABASES
Electronic databases are available from the FAU Libraries home page at
(http://www.fau.edu/library) by selecting “Research Resources” and
then "Indexes/Databases." When accessing the databases remotely,
select the link for the “EZproxy” server.
ABI/INFORM Complete
Gives references to journal articles on various economic topics from several ABI/INFORM databases including
Dateline, Global, Archive and Trade & Industry. It contains some full text
articles.
AccessUN
Provides references to the U.N. documents, including statistical reports
about various countries.
Business
Dateline
This database is helpful for finding information from local or regional
publications on economic issues. When searching this database it is best to use
a “keyword” search, which is a broader approach.
CountryWatch
This is good resource for finding economic, demographic and social
information about various countries around the world.
EconLit
Gives references to articles on economic topics in more than 400 economic
journals, books and some dissertations. Coverage is from 1989 to the
present.
LEXIS-NEXIS Academic
Includes current articles from news wires, newspapers, magazines and journals in the “Business
News” section of this database. Most effective way of searching is
by typing keywords in the “Headline.”
LEXIS-NEXIS Statistical
Provides summaries and links to statistical
information in U.S. government publications.
MarketLine Business Information Centre (MBIC)
This database
is helpful for finding information on global issues that would impact
companies and industries. It gives access to economic data from 50 countries.
Mergent Online
This database is especially useful for locating detailed financial information
on public companies, including a section on SEC filings. There are
also reports on countries that include economic and trade data.
PAIS International
Provides information, including economic data, from publications for over
120 countries around the world. Publications indexed are journal
articles, books, government documents, conference reports and others.
Political Risk Yearbook Online
Gives reports on more than 106 countries, which
include political and economic risk analyses.
Wall
Street Journal 1984-Present
Provides full text access to articles, which can be searched by subject or keywords.
EVALUATING INFORMATION
If you are not using one of the “Electronic Databases” listed
above or other databases via the FAU
Libraries Electronic Collection, you
need to consider some of the following questions when evaluating information
from the Internet:
1. How authoritative is the source of the information?
2. How accurate is the information?
3. How reliable is the information?
4. How current is the information?
5. How relevant is the information to my topic?
