Though we understand that textbooks are very expensive, the library is unable to borrow required textbooks through Interlibrary Loan. Why?
-
Few libraries purchase textbooks
-
Fewer libraries have the newest edition
-
Libraries that do purchase textbooks usually reserve them for on-campus use only
-
Books can take two weeks or more to arrive
-
Loan periods are usually 3 – 4 weeks
-
Loan due dates are set by the lending library, not FAU libraries
-
Renewals are not always allowed by the lending library
-
When a renewal is allowed, it usually for 1 - 2 weeks
-
Interlibrary Loan items are subject to immediate recall by the lending library
-
Failure to
return items by due date can result in
-
Charges by the lending library for the full cost of the book and a processing fee
-
Access to all FAU Libraries privileges would be suspended until item is returned and/or any fees are paid
-
Grades, class registration, transcripts, and graduation would be blocked until item is returned or fees paid
-
FAU Libraries could be blocked from borrowing from the lending library for any FAU patron
-
FAU Interlibrary Loan department tries every means to borrow items for free, at no cost to the patron. However, often requests can cost between $10 - $20. FAU Libraries does not have the funding to request hundreds of textbooks.
If you cannot afford to buy your textbooks from the campus bookstore, consider sharing with a classmate or an online bookstore such as
