FOOD RIOTS & SOARING FOOD PRICES
News item: Surging global food prices have caused riots and protests throughout Haiti, Niger, Cameroon, Senegal, Burkina Faso, and Egypt. Many other countries also face social unrest. According to the World Bank, food prices have risen over 80 percent within the past three years. Some of the factors causing the price hikes include the rising cost of oil, the production of biofuels that turn food into fuels, climate change, and poor harvests. See articles in the New York Times, the Guardian (London), Democracy Now! and other news outlets for details.
